Anxious to see what the new TODs will look like when they begin to mushroom around the stations like Fairview and Kirkland, now that we are beginning to see how jarring Fairview station looks in its 1960s and 1970s surroundings. Will the Fairview TOD be like the Jetsons? Or more like the Flintstones?

It is expected to be rebuilt in 2023, and I agree with you, the St-Jean, St-Charles, and Ste-Marie overpasses will never get properly rebuilt because of the carte-blanche given to CDPQi for REM-A. Even the long-planned Stillview crossing — if it ever gets built — would now have to become a complicated tunnelling project under the 40 and the service road. Until the 1980s, I don’t believe there were any residential towers in Manhattan more than 120 m tall. “Mixed-use” in North America really only started in the 1990s. Shops and restaurants in the podium of an office building don't constitute mixed-use.

My dad‘s secretary lived in Le Cartier — her husband was in the diplomatic corps for I don’t remember which country. They had kids around our age and we visited one weekend afternoon and went swimming in the pool on the top floor. Maybe I’m misremembering, but wasn’t this one of the Montreal land holdings of the Vatican?

They were indeed comfy, and they held up really well up until that effing American phenomenon started to creep into our society up here and the youths started defacing anything and everything.

I usually fly home at night and the routing from Minneapolis or Detroit often gives me a view of Mirabel on the downwind leg before all the sights from the Big Owe and downtown on final. The key is to request a window seat on the left side (“A”) for any flights into YUL (or LGA, for that matter) from February to November (thanks to the prevailing winds).
