Yes, but we’ve spent (are spending) much more for pigmented asphalt — which lasts much longer than paint, TPU, or MMA — so my beef is that the shade of “terracotta” (if one can call it that) on which we’ve chosen to spend all that extra money is barely distinguishable from the asphalt in the regular driving lanes. I mentioned it previously in the SRB-Sauvé/Côte-Vertu thread.

I just threw that in for the “extreme”. 😄 But other places, whether in Europe or Asia, operate HSTs on shorter distances alongside conventional-speed trains, with measurable reductions in travel times. While I don’t believe there is a market on the Montréal-Québec leg to make HSR viable, that doesn’t mean we should just accept the HFR proponents’ fallacies at face value. OTOH, I do think the time is now (if not 20 years ago) to invest the $40-50 billion it might take to develop true HSR between Montreal and Toronto.
  9. That doesn’t change the fact that we, in Montreal, spend more than double the next closest city on snow clearing, and we are indisputably the best at snow clearing anywhere in the world. The point wasn’t about the paint coming off, it’s about how we “cannot rely on road paint if it is partly hidden by snow 2-3 months per year.” We clear the snow, the notion of not using brighter-coloured road markings because they’d be “hidden” by snow is nonsense if other cities that get snow (and don’t clear it as well as we do) still manage to use contrasting colours for transitways and bike lanes. We also don’t repaint road markings anywhere nearly as often as other cities do.
  10. I’m really not sure any of these politicians, if they think they are telling the truth, know the first friggin thing about electric trains. Notwithstanding the fact that the Shanghai maglev accelerates to 431 km/h within about 2 minutes of leaving the airport or Pudong CBD stations, covering the 30 km route in less than 8 minutes (the times I’ve taken it, the runs ranged from 7m22s to 8m10s), conventional electric HSTs reach top cruising speed within 5 km and stop from that speed within about 7 km, and surpass the proposed top HFT speeds within around 90 seconds of leaving a station. Any claims that HSTs need longer distances to reach their potential top cruising speeds are pure gaslighting attempts by supporters of alternate modes, or parties that have conflicting interests and ulterior motives. Unlike planes, trains don’t need to reach altitude to hit their top speeds; flights from Dorval to JFK/LGA/EWR take 51 minutes wheels up to wheels down in a CRJ-900 jet that can fly at 500 knots, and just 14 minutes longer in a Q400 propeller plane that reaches 360 knots while consuming 40% less fuel. Trains just need to go, and electric trains accelerate smoothly to high speeds within very short distances; HSTs will always take substantially less time to cover the same distance as a slower train, even over shorter distances. Take a Tokaido line Nozomi just 27 km from Yokohama to Shinagawa (18 minutes) and tell me it’s not worth it compared to the non-Shinkansen Keihin train (29 minutes).

  12. Once again, the idea that snow somehow limits the use of more vibrant colours appears to be yet another local assumption. How do other snow-belt cities — none of which come close to having the snow removal capabilities and expertise of Montreal! — manage to use properly distinguishable pavement colours for transitways and bike lanes? Why must we always aim to do things differently from established norms, and inevitably fail to do things better than the how it’s done elsewhere? https://nacto.org/publication/transit-street-design-guide/transit-lanes-transitways/lane-elements/pavement-markings-color/ Minneapolis, which has hotter summers, colder winters, and more storms than Montreal: Boston (more snow per snowfall, lousier clearing): Toronto, New York, etc. all use red paint or MMA. But even places that use pigmented asphalt have more contrast than we use. Pigmented asphalt costs substantially more than paint, thermoplastic, or MMA, and is less flexible — ie more costly to repair or do over — so it’s not a question of costs.

S'ils vont dépenser des milliards de dollars et une décennie de travail juste pour essayer de trouver un moyen d'amener les trains autour de la montagne jusqu'à la gare centrale, alors pourquoi ne pas simplement construire une nouvelle infrastructure au sud de la gare centrale? Un nouveau pont ferroviaire dédié coûterait sûrement moins cher que d'essayer de trouver une route de Laval à travers la ville et autour de la montagne jusqu'à la gare centrale. Ou alors cela coûterait sûrement moins cher que de réadapter le tunnel déjà réadapté pour le REM. Ou bien moins que la construction d'un deuxième tunnel. Like I said, this idea keeps getting dumber and dumber.

I assume that means coming in on the CP tracks, and building a whole new intercity station at Wilderton… across an untamed boulevard intersection… 300 m away from the REM station… Passengers with luggage… in winter… I don’t buy it. I honestly still don’t get what this obsession is with going to QC by the north. For more than a century the trains have left downtown from the south. The last train to go to Ottawa via the Mount Royal tunnel left Central Station before Place Ville Marie was built.

  18. OK I always feel like a little kid when I go to the Kirkland worksite! yes, the crane they are using to hoist the platform beams into position at Kirkland station is friggin huge.

  20. LGV in France costs around €30 million per km. Consider virtually all transit construction here costs double what it is in France, so you’d be looking at ~$100 million per km for 540 km, of north of $50 Billion for the LGV between Montreal and Toronto… and would still need the lower-speed lines to Quebec City, and between Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal.
  21. I think she’s also moving ahead of schedule. The crossing was supposed to take a couple of weeks in September, then moved up to August. She’ll be at the service road within a week or two. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
