Promenades Cathédrale

Début de rénovation du centre commercial Promenades Cathédrale, entre le La Baie et le Centre Eaton. Il s'agit de la 2e refonte de ce centre commercial depuis son ouverture en 1988. La première refonte avait eu lieu à la fin des années 90. On arrache tout, et on r'commence. Ça tombe bien, le centre en arrache. Plus de 50% de locaux vacants.

Didn't they convert like 2 floors of retail into parking the last time they renovated?  I recall the grand-ness of the original space (high 80's glam) and it became a glorified corridor with boutiques and services; a connector between the Bay and Eaton.

They did convert. They still have a pic of what it looked like before, near the Dollarama. There was a gigantic food hall in the basement level and they even had a scene for bands to play with water running around it. Arches recalling the cathedral were put on the ceiling along the corridors. 80s excentricity to its maximum. But the space felt empty as the middle of the place was a huge open area looking down the food court, and no place for big retail. The feeling of the space can still be felt in the parking garage underneath, which took the space of the food court.

Je vais montrer mon âge là, mais quand cette place était rénovée... c'était le centre d'achat le plus hot en ville ou presque. 

C'est fou comment ça a changé.

Ils scrappent le plancher et on peut constater que lors de la réno de la fin 90s, ils avaient posé la nouvelle céramique (beige) directement par dessus l'ancienne (mauve/rose). En ce moment, ils scrappent les deux couches de céramique jusqu'au béton. La céramique originale mauve foncée peut encore être vue dans les escaliers menant aux édicules. Ce sont les derniers vestiges de la version originale.

Je préférais nettement la première version à la deuxième. Il y avait plus de volume. Enfin, du renouveau!
