Until we stop 'othering' people, based on their religion, language, sexual orientation, skin colour etc., this debate will continue. 'Minorities ( as defined by some of the above characteristics) will continue to awake to the reality that they are discriminated against systemically because of their minority position. In seriously autocratic societies they are being punished (as in jail sentences, or even state sanctioned murders) because of their gender or religion. In more democratic countries their minority rights will be protected. But even so, they will continue to be discriminated against by rules and customs that have been defined by the majority group. As the minorities 'wake up' to the reality that this discrimination negatively affects their job opportunities etc., they are free to express their concerns. I agree that efforts to respond to this very legitimate concern can be farcical, and I also agree that the political correctness of Ontario has become part of the problem. I also believe that quotas etc. are not the answer. This approach will only fuel the 'anti-woke' movement to continue its quiet discriminatory ways. My sense is that a healthy dialogue will slowly displace the extremist's views and that, over time, the correct balance will find itself. The women's movement is a great example of this; it remains far from completed, but the positive changes over the past decades are real and are helping to create a more balanced and tolerant and healthy society. Nor is it a coincidence that Quebec, in many ways, leads the pack on this issue. The tolerance of the Quebec majority is to be admired and strengthened; not attacked. -
