  1. That’s great, except the “Château Grosvenor” is basically a slum in a high rent area. The tree in the courtyard provides pleasant shade for all the heroin addicts. The owner of the building is a slumlord and people generally stay in this building for less than two years. It would be wonderful if a modern developer bought this property and integrated the old façade with a modern high-rise building.

    'A lot of work behind closed doors' going into Montreal MLB push: Stingray CEO Shane McNeil, BNN Bloomberg Feb 5, 2021 The push to get baseball back to Montreal soldiers on despite the hit live sporting events have had from the COVID-19 pandemic. Eric Boyko, chief executive officer of Stingray Digital Group Inc., said in an interview on Friday that talks persist to get a Major League Baseball presence in the city, even though many North American professional sports teams still play their games in empty stadiums and arenas. “Even during the pandemic, my partner Stephen Bronfman has been working very hard and things are still moving along faster than I imagined,” Boyko said. “It’s always too early to say because the pandemic’s not finished, but I would say there’s been a lot of work behind closed doors and a lot of things moving forward.” Boyko is one of many Montreal-based executives who have been linked to the push to get baseball back to the city, joining the aforementioned Bronfman, fellow Claridge Inc. executive Pierre Boivin, Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. co-founder Alain Bouchard and former Cirque du Soleil chair Mitch Garber. Bronfman’s father Charles was the majority owner of the Montreal Expos from their inception into the MLB in 1968 through 1990. Montreal’s baseball culture has remained engaged since the Expos decamped to Washington D.C. in 2005 and rebranded as the Nationals. The city has hosted Toronto Blue Jays pre-season games since 2014 at Olympic Stadium, the Expos former home, drawing as many as 100,000 fans over a two-game series. The Jays had been scheduled to once again play at the Big O in 2020, but the games were scrapped due to the onset of the pandemic. In recent years, the city has been linked to the struggling Tampa Bay Rays in various relocation and game-sharing scenarios. The prospect of splitting the team’s games between Montreal and St. Petersburg, Fla.has a particular historical parallel, as the Expos shared home games with San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2003 and 2004. The Rays averaged fewer than 15,000 fans per gamein 2018 and 2019. However, the MLB has also just come off an unprecedented 2020 season that saw regular season games played without fans, many games postponed and some cancelled outright, an expanded playoff tournament played at neutral sites, and a World Series that ended with Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner getting pulled in the sixth inning of the deciding game due to a positive COVID-19 test. The Blue Jays were also forced to play all of their 2020 home games at the stadium of their minor league Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo, N.Y. due to cross-border travel restrictions. With those restrictions remaining in place, the team could once again play their home games remotely, whether in Buffalo or Dunedin, Fla.   9. Right. Walk around inside the Big O and you wonder if you took a wrong turn and are in a different structure than you saw from the outside! Even though it was just as bleak and dank in 1976 (I went to the Opening Ceremony and some track & field events, then every Als game from 77 to 82 and many Expos games from 77 on), it was still a marvel. We ignored the Ugly because we were there for the events, the excitement, the atmosphere. Ugly neighbourhoods similarly can be very attractive. I mean, look at Little Italy (and most of RPP).

    Alors comment ça des rames à 40 mètres sans options pour pérenniser? Ça n’a rien à voir avec le sur-achalandage de la ligne Orange. Effectivement un “automated people mover” ou un tramway automatisé dans l’air. Bondé, à la fréquence maximale (sur le tronçon commun), ces petits trains vont n’accommoder que 12000 passagers par heure. Compare ça a la ligne Orange: à sa fréquence maximale (théorique), le métro bougerait 44000/h.

    Oy. We should be striving for perfection at the outset. Compromises are only reached when there are no good alternatives. Cutting corners — like the lack of a direct connection from REM Centrale’s platforms, or at least from the hall, to STM Metro Bonaventure — is not because there are no decent alternatives. It’s just being cheap. Same as the new Vendôme intermodal station and MUHC interface. It could have been SO. MUCH. BETTER. But they ignored recommendations from the consultative process and went ahead with their cheaper design. I’m not arguing that compromises shouldn’t exist, but poor design is poor design, poor planning is poor planning.
  14. Anthony is correct it was the Four Seasons long before it was an Omni. ETA: the Four Seasons logo was never a flower or star, it was a conical-shaped tree with four stylized “seasons” on it.

    I’m thinking of logistics. A 500m walk in Montreal is a hike. It’s not a “transfer.” Rapid transit is supposed to make urban travel more efficient, not more hassle.

    These are really a joke. What’s the term they use so much these days? Gaslighting? At the proposed locations of the two REM stations, these will both be 500m+ serpentine hustles outside of fare-controlled areas — and very likely at least partially outdoors.

    Juste pour m'assurer que mes pensées ne semblent pas ambiguës: je suis tout à fait d'accord qu'une grande structure surélevée ne devrait pas continuer à l'ouest du Fairmont Queen Elizabeth et devant la cathédrale, fendant la Place/Square en deux, à moins que cette structure ne soit vraiment plus haute qu’on a vu ailleurs jusqu'à présent - y compris la gare de Kirkland.

    That’s rather subjective. I agree that in any city I’ve visited with elevated metros, most — but not all — go underground in the heart of downtown or the historic centre (Tokyo is a horse of a different colour). Taipei, KL, and Bangkok all have some of their main lines above principal downtown streets. But that said, why is futuristic mass transit “bad” on grand boulevards but eight lanes of asphalt with arsehole drivers and idling delivery trucks is perfectly fine? It’s time to upend that paradigm!
