  4. Transport Quebec plans to rebuild 5 km of the Metropolitan The roadwork is expected to cause significant traffic headaches — some sections of the highway are used by 177,000 vehicles daily. MONTREAL GAZETTE Updated: January 11, 2020 Cars drive through the interchange between Highway 15 and Highway 40 (Metropolitan) in Montreal on Nov. 3, 2010. Some sections of the Metropolitan are used by 177,000 vehicles daily, according to Transport Quebec statistics. DARIO AYALA / THE GAZETTE SHAREADJUSTCOMMENTPRINT Transport Quebec is laying the groundwork for major repairs to five kilometres of the elevated Metropolitan Expressway/Highway 40 between St-Laurent Blvd. and Provencher Blvd. The department has issued a public tender seeking plans and specifications for the work, including the reconstruction of roadside barriers and the exterior of concrete slabs, as well as the replacement of deck expansion joints and lighting systems. Drainage will also be modernized. Major repairs are being planned to the Metropolitan Expressway. TRANSPORT QUEBEC Transport Quebec said it hopes to give out the contract by the spring of 2020, with the plans and specifications expected to be ready by 2023. Work is not expected to begin before 2024. The roadwork is expected to cause significant traffic headaches. Some sections of the highway in question are used by 177,000 vehicles daily, according to Transport Quebec statistics. Construction on the Metropolitan started in 1957, but work wasn’t completed until the 1960s. STORY CONTINUES BELOW The department said the planned work “will make it possible to operate this section (of the Metropolitan) without any other major intervention for a period of approximately 25 years, while equipping the infrastructure with up-to-date technology in terms of network monitoring and lighting.” A 5.2-kilometre stretch of the Metropolitan Expressway will be upgraded. TRANSPORT QUEBEC The stretch of the Metropolitan in question is between St-Laurent Blvd. (at the border of the Ahuntsic—Cartierville and Villeray—St-Michel—Parc-Extension boroughs) and Provencher Blvd. in St-Léonard borough. While the major repair project is being prepared, Transport Quebec said it will continue to carry out work required to ensure the infrastructure remains safe. That includes paving the highway and entry and exit ramps over the next two years. Transport Quebec did not provide an update on planning for the western section of the Metropolitan, which runs between St-Laurent Blvd. and Highway 520 in St-Laurent borough. https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/transport-quebec-plans-to-rebuild-5-km-of-the-metropolitan
