  1. Please re-read what you've said above. You're effectively saying to build whatever reasonable heights can be achieved on the reclaimed land. We agree on that point. Please also recall that the area is a dump because a certain Montreal mayor parking lotted half of it for Expo 67, zoned it industrial and built a highway through it. But now that it's finally recovering, reconnecting both sides of the highway is an important goal. I read back to some of Cataclaw's earlier posts so that he wouldn't have to repeat the same arguments. It seems that there is consensus that the LRT (light rail) would be the most effective transport solution in the Bonaventure corridor. We shouldn't even be discussing a bus solution at all here: the 42000 daily passengers should be riding on rails. I'm not sure how much time you spend in the area, but if you have some free time, I propose a rush-hour challenge: walk Ottawa Street from Ann to Prince walk William Street from Shannon to Prince walk Notre-Dame from Montfort to Duke Then let us know which option is the most pedestrian friendly. Let us know which route you'd rather take to get across the highway from Griffintown to Old Montreal or vice-versa.
  3. The CSRG memoire and presentation to the OCPM sum it up: Memoire (PDF) Presentation (PDF) The Dalhousie Corridor element of the project epitomizes poor execution. And the rest of the project can be summarized as dropping an urban highway to ground level. I thank you for the credit you give myself and my neighbours who feel that they should be able to live in a neighbourhood with less diesel bus exhaust and fewer lanes of traffic to cross between Griffintown and Old Montreal. Most of us have felt rather powerless save for a few moments of glory at the OCPM (whose recommendations fell on deaf ears in the Comite Executif). Or, even better than that, they'd simply incorporate the changes that turn the project into a viable long-term solution, and THEN go ahead with popular support behind them (yes, even from the NIMBYs).
  4. I would argue that it is a complete lack of leadership. As the people you love to refer to as NIMBYs made clear in all of their communication at the OCPM, the idea of transforming the Bonaventure is great. The execution is poor. Why is the execution poor? It's not because we don't have great talent in this city to design intelligent projects. It's because we don't have leaders who will allow that talent to shine and shield them from the corrupt influences. We could have a great project with popular support moving ahead right now. We don't because of poor leadership from the start.
The SLR (light rail) has been the real long-term solution for decades. While many will throw their hands up and say that there's no money, it can't cross a bridge or it's a silly idea, consider the following: an SLR link to the base of the Victoria or Champlain bridge is enough to let the buses transfer their passengers earlier without having to fight through an urban environment the infamous airport train could be headed for Bonaventure, and it has better chances of actually being funded. The SLR and airport train could share some right of way, infrastructure and rolling stock, saving costs. Bonaventure is a pendulum highway, and has been redundant since the completion of Ville-Marie. An SLR can render it obsolete!
The complex is one of the largest surviving examples of its era in the world. The two buildings dating back to about 1860 are real treasures, inside and out. If the 1860s era buildings are preserved and are "mis en valeur", I wouldn't expect a huge NIMBY effect. However, if promoters choose to ignore the value of the site, then you can expect a huge backlash. Let's hope we get to see more of the former in Griffintown!
