We're in the mire of exceptional sanitary measures, and you might be overestimating the importance and permanence of some phenomena that we're observing right now, that are most likely transient. Tuition count for around 10% of universities revenues in Quebec (it's more in other provinces), domestic student count for the majority of the student body. Remote learning actually is more expensive in education because of the decentralization of services, technological infrastructure cost, and technological support to staff and special aid students. Not to forget the benefits of proximity and socialization in education.

There is no denying that even before this pandemic, businesses were more opt to explore remote work and remote learning, especially workplace training. All was on an uptrend. The events of this year just accelaerated the inevitable. Billions are being invested in networks to facilitate the transition.

We have yet to see the true power of 5G and Elon Musk's Neuralink, which will radically change the world especially health and education. A huge amount of transit movement is students and the workforce which has been affected most likely permanantly. My work which was ademently opposed to remote work, has now said that physical presence at work will now be the exception permanantly. This will definatley affect public transit use since we are not the only comapany to do such changes. I think it is economically irresponsible to not forsee such societal shifts that are coming before the end of the decade.

Why stop now? Which areas should it stop?

It's already in a really advanced state, rolling smoothly, and I don't really see any segment they can abandon.

If there's a project that can be revisited (re-confirm, re-ajust, or re-evaluate), it's the blue-line extension that still only exists only on paper.

Focus on Phase I only since it is most advanced and will be most widely used. Delay or cancel the rest. It seems like the only logical thing to do now. I was really excited about this project but I can see long term, it just won't be profitable or used much at all. They need to think long term. Businesses see the advantage of remote work both in terms of productivity going up and work-life balance since you no longer commute. But especially bottom line. Right now, businesses are absorbing the loss in revenue but they cannot continue for much longer. Universities will close because a large proportion of their revenue is foreign students, especially the english ones. They will shift to remote learning because they at least need some form of revenue recouperation.

  3. The governement should seriously consider delaying or stoppping construction of this project especially in certain areas. It is a huge waste of funds imo. The pandemic accelerated the trend towards remote work and remote learning.  Not only will businesses reduce their square footage when their lease comes up, in a few years, universities/high schools will close also. This new transport system will be an underused and expensive to maintain white elephant. They also fail to plan for driverless taxis and autonomous vehicules.

You have nothing to worry about. Smoke and mirriors show.

Maybe it is weather related. Maybe we screwed ourselves by staying indoors.

The sun is up much longer here this time of year then any other major North American city. We will see what happens when the days get shorter and we go back indoors.

  6. This project is dead not because of the commercial aspect, it is the residential part that was never approved and had very heavy opposers. The cranes will come down before the end of the year.

I guess that is a good way for them to use the spot for the next 6 months and get money.

I posted it last Sunday actually. La Presse reporters often use mtlurb.com for their reporting work. :)

  8. It was in trouble before the pandemic. Now it will become this...

It is with huge excitement that we announce Canada’s first Drive-in Event Theatre in Montreal. The concept is to offer guests and corporate clients the ability to be ENTERTAINED , while respecting SAFE DISTANCING PRACTICES.

The Royalmount Event Theatre located at the nexus of Décarie and Highway 40 at the new Royalmount project, will be a drive-in venue capable of hosting movie nights, live bands, comedy shows, speciality screenings, graduations, live sporting events, corporate presentations, launches and other public gatherings.

    • Window service will be available to eliminate the need for guests to leave their vehicles.

    • Individual bathrooms will be maintained with a team to disinfect after each use.

    • Premium audio will be broadcast to each car though their own sound system.

With a 30ft stage and 50ft LED screen, this 250 car site will be available for rent to private groups, charitable organizations, schools and other collectives.

We intend to offer guests the ability to exit their vehicles and ‘tailgate’ in a predetermined safe zone in front of their own vehicle.

This project is conceived and executed by two of Canada’s leading event producers

    Adam Bultz

    of

    C3 Events

    and

    Lorne Levitt

    of

    Total Events

, both leaders in the Montreal event community and experts in design and logistics. It is also being built with support of Carbonleo Real Estate Inc., the visionaries behind the new Royalmount neighbourhood.

Approved by both the province and local municipalities, this group is looking to include programming from Cineplex, evenko, Just for Laughs and many other of the cities top promoters and will be rolling out a full schedule of programming over the next month.

Is this supposed to convey a particular meaning?

Yes. Many meetings starting this week to essentially block any residential aspect of this project. As much as I would LOVE to see this happen, there are storm clouds coming from everywhere

They will never get it. Even with the current changes that are proposed. I cannot say why until later but there is even a team of lawyers in Toronto involved.

  12. It's been said many times that the graffitti will be removed at the completion of the project. However, If you go and spray paint a big, fat penis or write rascist remarks, it will be removed the next day. I am not kidding.

Alstom Selects Teleste's Information Displays for the REM Transit System in Canada

NEWS PROVIDED BY Teleste Corporation  |  15 Jan, 2020, 11:20 GMT

TURKU, Finland , Jan. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Teleste Corporation will supply Alstom with information displays for the stations of the REM (Réseau express métropolitain) light-rail transit system in Montreal, Canada. The deployment will consist of 284 ETL certified indoor and outdoor TFT LCD displays, which will be delivered to Alstom from 2019 to 2022.

Once completed, the REM Montreal light-rail transit system will be one of the largest automated transport networks in the world. The system will cover 26 stations and its daily ridership is estimated to reach close to 200,000. It will also connect to the other public transit systems in the area, including bus, metro and commuter rail lines to create a region-wide transportation network.

"As today's passengers expect to navigate through the city-wide public transport networks smoothly and safely, the relevant travel information needs to be available and clearly displayed at every step of their journey. In addition to excellent travel experience, seamless delivery of information is needed to manage the strong growth in passenger traffic that we see taking place wordwide today. We are pleased to work with Alstom to ensure the high availability of passenger information within the REM transit system, and are confident that our display technologies will help provide an easier journey for the users of the Greater Montreal public transport network", explained Cyrille Bordes, Sales Director for Teleste.

The REM system aims to meet its passengers' everyday public transport needs by offering services such as competitive travel times and full integration with the city's other public transit systems. To support the smooth passenger flow and easy traveling, Teleste's TFT LCD display technologies offer a solid platform for sharing information from various data sources and displaying it at stations, platforms and entrances. The clear and sharp displays have excellent visibility, and features such as automatic brightness control and low reflection make them highly suited for both indoors and outdoors.

Special technical requirements for the delivery of information in the REM system are set by the city's weather conditions with heavy snow and freeze during winter time. As a manufacturer with profound experience in Nordic conditions, Teleste has ensured that its displays withstand demanding outdoor environments: they are protected against snow, dust and rain, and they offer reliable year-round operation even in very low temperatures.

The maintenance costs were taken into account as well when purchasing because no other screen technology available can have a better contrast ratio  than OLED screens. TFT LCD is old but more reliable tech.

"Something" bearing the name of the project is visibly under construction now.  On the basis of your message, I wonder what those storm clouds could be.  -- Zoning issues?  Financing?  Or lack of commiments for road access improvements from either or both the City of Montreal and the MTQ?

One of your guesses is the issue .
