When summer rolls into town, some cities empty as the temperature rises to less-than-pleasant heights, while others transform, shedding their winter coats and emerging as sleek, gorgeous summer models filled with charms and comforts that were barely evident only weeks earlier.

Among the many cities that come alive in the summer, which is the very best? That is, which city should be crowned the World’s Best Summer City?*

 

We put this question to our Facebook and Twitter followers, and the debate heated up like a dashboard on a hot summer day. Should it be a city that is cold most of the year and only warms up for a short, glorious period? Or should it be a city that is nice almost any time of year, but gets truly spectacular in summer? The votes tell the story:

The top two vote-getters were Barcelona and Sydney, two cities that could easily be described as year-round destinations. At the peak of summer, both cities can also be unpleasantly hot, overly expensive and crowded, which is why Lonely Planet guidebook authors generally recommend visiting a bit earlier or later in the year.

 

Voters started talking some sense at 3rd place: Montreal, London, Chicago – now these are cities that really come alive in the summer. These cities wait for months for the dreary cold winter to disappear, and then explode in fits (and festivals) of joy that last throughout the summer months. It has been said that London is the most beautiful city on earth when the sun is shining, mostly because it’s such a novelty. After enduring months of grey drizzle, the argument becomes rather convincing.

 

All of these are world-class cities, but can one of them truly be called the World’s Best Summer City? Nope. According to Lonely Planet Travel Editor Robert Reid, voters simply forgot to vote for the real winner: Irkutsk. (Just kidding. His actual pick is Reykjavik.)

Thanks JFrosty! I'm so happy it's being re-cladded. It really stuck out like a sore-thumb in the Quartier des Spectacles.

Exxxxxcitinggggggg! Come on Waldorf, make my last year at Concordia even better, as I gaze up at a new floor being added every week. I can dream, right?

I didn't know where to put this, and perhaps someone has already mentioned it, but I was in the Quartier des Spectacles today, and I noticed they just started re-cladding the ugly yellow UQAM building with grey brick! If you ask me, it looks much nicer than the original yellow-stained facade.

Hmm... I went by on May 9th, and they had the scaffolding up for the 2nd floor. It's now the 25th and they don't seem very much advanced from that... here's hoping things pick up!

You wanna hear something really wacky?

In 1976, Montreal hosted the Olympics. The following year, in 1977, the Canadiens finished first in the NHL and won the Stanley Cup.

In 1988, Calgary hosted the Olympics. The following year, in 1989, the Flames finished first in the NHL and won the Stanley Cup.

In 2010, Vancouver hosted the Olympics. The following year, in 2011, the Canucks finished first in the NHL and are now in the Stanley Cup Final...

I guess hosting the Olympics in this country brings you closer to the Stanley Cup

I sat two seats away from Kent Nagano today on my flight from Frankfurt to Montreal. He looks much older in person

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! I am so very impressed.

On CTV News last night, they said the destruction of the buildings will begin "in a couple of days"

They have begun removing the eastern exterior wall! It's moving quickly!

I'm totally getting ahead of myself, but I've been in the Saint Laurent headquarters a few times; if they want to regroup everything under one roof, that would result in a MASSIVE tower, especially if it was located on a rather small plot of land in the QdS. There are dozens of sound rooms, conference rooms that stretch on and on over hallways that never seem to end, and theatre rooms of all different sizes, not to mention the areas that are restricted only to employees, with the archives that consist of tens of thousands of video projects, and people's offices. Unless they really want to keep the Saint Laurent building and only have a small tower downtown... we shall know soon enough!

You guys are right, 145-155m makes more sense. Also, 133m for the 27-storey tower seems... weird? That's 4.9m PER floor. That's a little high, no?
