Montreal floating apartments

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone had any information about these apartments that bridge over alleyways. This is one I've always been interested in just off Duluth west of St.Denis.

Why were they constructed? What were they connecting? For this one, I noticed on this 1939 insurance map that it is connected to the clothing factory.

 

Let me know if you have any ideas or other examples from around town!
