I personally like the eclectic nature of Montreal architecture, including Brutalism and even the functional fifties.

Uh-oh!

What is the density of this project? It is very close to the metro.

It removes affordable housing.

I like the fact that the new building does not come at the cost of the older, more interesting buildings.

Interesting discussion: when I go to Paris I am so impressed with the uniformity of Haussmann's Paris and find the occasional 1960's apartment buildings look so out of place but on the other hand Dominic723 argument that "just repeating the neighbor facade" and bringing new angles which makes me think of NYC.

The initial plan really respects the existing buildings: why did they change it?

Hopefully Parks Canada can find money to keep it safe. Maybe offices?

This extension is part of the initial project, it looks like it just wasn't integrated into the main volume with the steel structure, as we can see 3 units & 3 stairs on the key plan of this unit (see the link). I admit it is a particular construction technique, but when you look at the old photos, the whole site was excavated at the same time.

If so can you access the new annex via the garage?

It will be finished just in time to start dismantling the Molson warehouse across the street.

Site of the famous Desjardins Seafood, a Montreal institution, here shown in the 1960s (first photo), then in the mid-1970s (second photo, we can see the 2020 university and the ICAO tower fully built, as well as the hotêl Quatre Saisons and its adjacent office tower under construction) and then in 1979 (third photo with the extension on the front lot) and finally abandoned in the early 2010. The restaurant closed somewhere between 2005 and 2009. The building was shaved 6-7 years ago. So much for the little history of the site.
Great images, thanks! With this you can see that it lost a lot of its charm when they put in the extension and took out the patio. As well, it was always a fish out of water (pun intended) because it looks like it belonged on a major boulevard in the suburbs, not sandwiched between four story apartments downtown.

About time! They closed that seafood restaurant how many years ago?
-
Why do't they head the other way to Adonis.

These are the same guys who were working on a hotel at 6645 St-Jacques, in NDG (also in their portfolio). They stopped work months before COVID and it looks abandoned.
-
I go by every morning: they are working and they have heavy machinery (that doesn't mean they are going to be quick).

Thanks for the article; pretty funny at times
