I wouldn't call Canada, especially under Prime Minister Harper, socialist by any means. He inherited a very liberal government (the liberal party isn't quite socialist, they support business and even the military to a certain extent). However, under the Tories we have been gradually moving toward the center. If the Tories get a majority we might even get to become a more conservative country like the US (although never to the same degree).

Obama, on the other hand, is bringing the US leftward, although they still sit on the right of the political spectrum.

However, I would consider moving to the US if

a) I got a decent job there

b) I can't take the climate here anymore

c) We do something stupid like abolish the monarchy (the "sacred cow" of many English Canadians) or move drastically to the left (say the NDP gets in and decides to disband the army, raise taxes and weaken the justice system)

Why wouldn't you move to the UK?

I would consider it if the cost of living there wasn't so high and Islamic extremism wasn't so rampant.

One thing. Is it easy to go to the UK to work or is it as hard as the US to get a "green card" or whatever they call it?

You will normally need a visa (and a Certificate of Sponsorship) to come to the United Kingdom to work.

However, if you are coming to the United Kingdom as a work permit holder for 6 months or less, or as a Temporary Worker in the Creative and Sporting Category of PBS Tier 5 for less than 3 months, you will not require a visa.

Information about work permits and the Points Based System is available on the UK Border Agency website.

I believe that there is a quota on work visas to non-EU migrants.

Yeah, the Statute of Westminster of 1931 (granting Canada full autonomy from Britain) put an end to Canadians being dual British citizens. Canadians fought as British soldiers in WW1 and the Boer War.

That said, the Her Majesty's role in this country is Queen of Canada. Canadians desire to retain her as our head of state, and the British government is not involved in the matter whatsoever (thus not giving us any special privileges). Technically speaking, the Queen of Canada and the Queen of the United Kingdom are two separate titles. So she is Canadian despite being British.

Having said that, Prime Ministers Harper and Cameron seem to get along well. I wouldn't be surprised (years down the road) if they came up with some sort of work/study mobility deal similar to what Quebec and France have done.

Don't forget the Orwellian spy cameras everywhere... gatsos sending you tickets on your car, CCTV on every street corner watching you... the country that was the birthplace of the Enlightenment and the modern concept of liberty has fallen so far and so hard :(

Thanks for the history of British and Canadian ties or I should say lack of ties.

I do hope Canada and Britain do come up with something similar to France and Quebec. Now if only Quebec / Toronto can do something with the city of New York or State of New York.

Quebec should butt out of such talks and France should talk directly to Canada... these guys are so... provincially-minded if you pardon the pun :D

It was like when Quebec and Ontario were making noise at Copenhagen, hello you are provinces, go home and fix some potholes and leave the foreign affairs to the big boys :stirthepot:
