La Terre comptera neuf milliards d'habitants en 2050

 

Selon le nouveau rapport de l'ONU, la croissance de la démographie mondiale devrait se produire essentiellement dans les pays les plus peuplés entre 2010 et 2050, comme la Chine.

 

La Terre comptera sept milliards d'habitants début 2012 et plus de neuf milliards en 2050, et ce sont les pays en développement d'Asie et d'Afrique qui enregistreront l'essentiel de cette hausse démographique, selon de nouvelles estimations de l'ONU rendues publiques mercredi.

 

«Il n'y a pas beaucoup de changements» par rapport aux dernières prévisions onusiennes de 2006 a précisé Hania Zlotnik, directrice de la Division population du département des affaires économiques et sociales de l'ONU.

 

«Nous estimons toujours qu'en 2050 la population mondiale sera d'environ 9,1 milliards», a-t-elle déclaré lors d'une conférence de presse. «Ces projections se fondent sur l'hypothèse que la fécondité qui est aujourd'hui d'environ 2,56 enfants par femme va décliner à environ 2,02 enfants par femme dans le monde.»

 

Selon le nouveau rapport de l'ONU, la croissance de la démographie mondiale devrait se produire essentiellement dans les pays les plus peuplés entre 2010 et 2050. Neuf pays devraient représenter la moitié de la hausse: l'Inde arrive en tête de la liste suivie par le Pakistan, le Nigeria, l'Éthiopie, les États-Unis, la République démocratique du Congo, la Tanzanie, la Chine et le Bangladesh.

 

En revanche, la population de 45 pays ou régions devrait décliner d'au moins 10% sur la même période, notamment en Russie, au Japon, en Italie, Corée du Sud, à Cuba, en Ukraine et dans de nombreuses autres ex-Républiques soviétiques.

 

Dans son précédent rapport 2006, publié en mars 2007, l'ONU prévoyait 9,2 milliards d'habitants dans le monde en 2050. La nouvelle estimation pour le milieu du siècle est légèrement inférieure (9,1 milliards).

 

Le nouveau rapport de l'ONU prévoit également que la population mondiale atteindra 6,8 milliards d'habitants en juillet, soit une hausse de 313 millions depuis 2005, et sept milliards début 2012.

 

Au cours des quatre prochaines décennies, la population des régions plus riches et plus développées devrait connaître un gain modeste, passant de 1,23 milliard à 1,28 milliard, tandis que celle des pays en développement devrait bondir de 5,6 milliards en 2009 à 7,9 milliards en 2050.

 

Pour empêcher un déclin global de leur démographie, les pays riches sont «très dépendants» des flux migratoires en provenance des pays développés, a souligné Mme Zlotnik. Les 49 pays les plus pauvres de la planète continuent à afficher la croissance démographique la plus rapide, et la population des nations les moins développées devrait doubler en passant de 840 millions en 2009 à 1,7 milliard en 2050.

 

La Terre compte également un nombre croissant de seniors. Dans les pays développés, la population des plus de 60 ans croît de 1,9% par an et devrait passer de 264 millions en 2009 à 416 millions en 2050, selon les chiffres de l'ONU. Cette tranche d'âge devrait aussi augmenter fortement dans les pays en développement, de 475 millions en 2009 à 1,6 milliard en 2050.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The world's population is forecast to hit 7 billion in 2011, the vast majority of its growth coming in developing and, in many cases, the poorest nations, a report released Wednesday said.

 

A staggering 97 percent of global growth over the next 40 years will happen in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the Population Reference Bureau's 2009 World Population Data Sheet.

 

"The great bulk of today's 1.2 billion youth -- nearly 90 percent -- are in developing countries," said Carl Haub, a co-author of the report. Eight in 10 of those youth live in Africa and Asia.

 

"During the next few decades, these young people will most likely continue the current trend of moving from rural areas to cities in search of education and training opportunities, gainful employment, and adequate health care," Haub continued, calling it one of the major social questions of the next few decades.

 

In the developed world, the United States and Canada will account for most of the growth -- half from immigration and half from a natural increase in the population -- births minus deaths, according to the report.

 

High fertility rates and a young population base in the developing world will fuel most of the growth, especially in Africa, where women often give birth to six or seven children over a lifetime, the report says. The number is about two in the United States and 1.5 in Canada.

 

A stark contrast can be drawn between Uganda and Canada, which currently have about 34 million and 31 million residents, respectively. By 2050, Canada's population is projected to be 42 million, while Uganda's is expected to soar to 96 million, more than tripling.

"Even with declining fertility rates in many countries, world population is still growing at a rapid rate," said Bill Butz, president of the bureau. "The increase from 6 billion to 7 billion is likely to take 12 years, as did the increase from 5 billion to 6 billion. Both events are unprecedented in world history."

 

By 2050, India is projected to be the world's most populous nation at 1.7 billion, overtaking current leader China, which is forecast to hit 1.4 billion. The United States is expected to reach 439 million for No. 3 on the list.

The number of humans isn't an issue. It's how they live and the resources they consume.

 

5 billion humans all living western lifestyles with 3 cars each and all the luxuries they're accustomed to ---- is far worse than 20 billion humans living under third world conditions.

 

Likewise, if we can convert to a renewable energy economy and be more environmentally conscious, we can certainly accomodate up to 8, 9, 10+ billion easily.
