that's about 7000 square feet per floor! Not very big, but when you consider there will only be 21 rooms, that would make these rooms HUGE!!!!

Most like will be Lobby + 15 Floors x 2 rooms + 5 Floors x 1 room

OOOPS! I meant to say 35 rooms. Even if you consider 2 rooms per floor, that 3500 sq ft per room, which is still huge!

More like 3000 because the ground floor will probably be closer to 10k. But still very big.

Je ne sais pas si ça fait partie des plans du Mount Stephen Club, mais c'est officiel que ce serait un plus pour eux. Ça rendrait le projet plus profitable!

MONTRÉAL - Le Club Mount Stephen privé, situé dans une résidence victorienne d’époque sur la rue Drummond, fermera ses portes en décembre à cause d’un déficit important.

 

L’immeuble est classé monument historique par Héritage Canada et par le ministère de la Culture du Québec. La fermeture du club privé rend l’avenir du bâtiment incertain.

 

«L’annonce de la fermeture du club est trop récente pour que nous puissions nous prononcer sur ce qu’adviendra du Mount Stephen. Il en reviendra aux propriétaires du bâtiment, le groupe hôtelier et immobilier TIDAN, de décider ce qu’ils en feront», affirme Harry J. Plafter, directeur général du club privé.

 

L’institution établie depuis 85 ans ne peut plus poursuivre ses activités, malgré des investissements de plusieurs millions pour améliorer le bâtiment au cours des dernières années.

 

Construit dans les années 1870, le Club Mount Stephen est l’un des plus beaux exemples d’architecture victorienne résidentielle en Amérique du Nord et se situe dans le Golden Square Mile de Montréal.

A famous Montreal Golden Square Mile social club is closing its doors for good on December 23.

 

Workers at the Mount Stephen Club had recently exercised their right to collective bargaining by forming a union and management and workers couldn't strike a deal.

 

Management says that revenues are as low as upkeep costs are steep.

 

"We have extended existing facilities," says club rep Harry Plafter. "We have built new halls and this has added a lot of capital investments, we're taking millions of dollars"

 

The magnificent building at 1440 Drummond, built as an ostentatious home of CPR boss George Stephen, is as posh on the inside as it is from the outside.

 

It was turned into a men's club in 1926 and women were permitted to join in 1964.

 

The building is also a favourite indoor location for visiting film productions and some worry that if abandoned, the building would deteriorate fast.

 

"There are precious woods in every room that will deteriorate fast without proper heating and ventilation," said Heritage Montreal's Dinu Bumbaru.

 

The Mount Stephen Club, founded in 1926 to preserve a historic building, is closing down.

 

"The losses have a lot do to with the fact that it's a very expensive building to operate and the fact that we have had to get involved into a discussion with the union, which added a lot of burden on us," said Plafter.

 

The building was used as the home of the rail magnate until 1926, when the owners opted to sell it in order to pay taxes.

 

Developers at the time planned to demolish the building and break up the lot, but a business group stepped in and bought the building to house their private club.

The mansion is classified by Quebec. Nobody can touch it, unless they dot illegally.
