WestJet Airlines Ltd. announced Monday it was expanding its relationship with Cathay Pacific Airways, and will implement its first so-called “code-share agreement” with the Hong Kong carrier.

 

The pair already had commercial agreement in place, but said they would be expanding their relationship to a full blown code-share to certain Canadian destinations starting of Oct. 20.

 

The expanded partnership will essentially allow the airlines to seamlessly pass inbound passengers on Cathay’s flights and their luggage onto WestJet’s planes using one ticket.

 

Under the terms of the agreement, Cathay Pacific will expand its network to six new cities Canadian, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Montreal, from its existing hubs in Vancouver and Toronto. WestJet will not be selling tickets, however, to Hong Kong, said Robert Palmer, WestJet spokesman.

 

It is the first such code-share for WestJet, and a significant milestone for the Calgary carrier. WestJet also has plans for a similar arrangement with Air France-KLM.

 

The cornerstone of WestJet’s growth strategy hinges on implementing such agreement, and management has said they estimated the market for such deals in Canada to be roughly $2-billion.

 

WestJet has said it is in talks with over 70 airlines about possible partnerships, including British Airways and Delta Air Lines.

 

But the implementation of these arrangements had been delayed for more than two years as WestJet struggled to get a new reservation system in place that could handle the complexity of such agreements. Late last year, the carrier managed to implement its new SabreSonic system, however, which has now allowed for the Cathay Pacific code-share to be implemented.

 

“As we continue to achieve our strategic goals, today's announcement is the first in a series of planned code-share agreements that help to solidify our vision to become one of the five most successful international airlines in the world,” said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet chief executive in a statement.

 

Last week, Cathay Pacific signed a similar agreement with Alaska Airlines.

Le chef de Projet Montréal, Richard Bergeron, a été mis à la porte du comité exécutif par le maire, Gérald Tremblay. Il annoncera la nouvelle demain matin lors d'une conférence de presse.

 

M. Bergeron menaçait depuis plusieurs jours de démissionner si le maire donnait son aval à un «mauvais» projet de reconstruction de l'échangeur Turcot. Il semble que Gérald Tremblay l'ait pris de court.

 

Richard Bergeron fera le bilan de son passage au sein du comité exécutif demain et «invitera la Ville de Montréal à mieux défendre les Montréalaises et les Montréalais contre le MTQ dans le dossier Turcot».

They cost up to $16,000 each - about twice as much as regular bus shelters - but Montreal's public transit chief says the sleek new shelters are worth it because they will make people feel that taking public transit is cool.

 

The first new bus-shelter prototype was unveiled yesterday at René Lévesque Blvd. and Jeanne Mance St. Two slightly different prototypes are to be installed in other locations this month.

 

Next year, after analyzing customer and employee reaction, the Société de transport de Montréal will decide which elements from each of the prototypes will be incorporated into 400 new shelters to be installed by 2013.

 

All the new shelters will be glass cubes decorated with yellow and blue stripes. They will all include benches, signs showing bus schedules and routes, and motion-sensors that turn up lighting when people enter the shelter.

 

Maps of the public-transit network will be covered with an anti-graffiti film that may also go on the glass walls. All shelters will feature lighting; some will be connected to the electrical grid, others powered by solar panels. The shelters will not be heated.

 

Next to new shelters will be a new type of bus-stop sign. Instead of small metal signs on poles, bus-stop details will be presented on "totems" - tall square posts that feature colour-coded bus-line numbers and bus-route maps.

 

The new shelters will cost $14,000 to $16,000 each, compared with the $6,000 to $8,000 price tag for the previous generation of shelters, said STM chairman Michel Labrecque.

 

"We're a 'design city' and we want to improve the customer experience," he answered when asked why fancier shelters are needed.

 

"You don't want people to have the impression they're in a bunker or a sarcophagus," he added, alluding to current shelters, which he described as dark and foul-smelling.

 

The STM calls the newfangled enclosure "the bus shelter of the 21st century"; one spokesperson suggested it was like "going from the Flintstones to Star Trek."

 

The STM is trying to improve its image and increase ridership, Labrecque noted.

 

"We need shelters that give a contemporary signature to public transit," he said. "It's the same with the totems. Compare them to the old poles that are all crooked."

 

With new shelters and bus-stop posts, "people will tell themselves - 'Sharp. I'm in something that's sharp. It's not only motorists who are in cutting-edge vehicles. My bus is nicer, my stop is nicer, the shelter is nicer,' " Labrecque said. "Beauty and design are not accessories. The difference in price between (shelters that are) 'not nice' and 'nice' is not that much."

 

In total, the STM will spend $14 million on the new-shelter project, but transit officials insisted that doesn't mean each shelter will cost $35,000 ($14 million divided by 400).

 

That's because the $14 million includes research and development, as well as infrastructure work around the new shelters, such as connections to the power grid and new concrete under shelters.

 

The 400 new shelters are destined for locations downtown and on heavily travelled routes. The STM has 3,032 bus shelters and about 8,000 bus stops. The shelter was designed by Leblanc + Tucotte + Spooner, the winning submission in a design competition.

Bonjour,

Je ne savais pas où poster ce sujet, alors j'ai mis ça dans hors-sujet.

 

Je pense que ma boîte de messages privés de fonctionne pas. J'ai demandé à des membres de la modération et à l'administrateur, par message privé, que je désirais avoir accès à la section Politique en haut du forum.

 

Maintenant que personne ne me répond par MP, je me demandais si je ne sais vraiment pas comment envoyer un message, ou si les membres de l'administration & modération poussaient vraiment l'effronterie jusqu'à ne même pas me répondre.
