Omni Mont-Royal to close on Dec. 10

'Operating difficulties' cited. More than 250 employees expected to lose their jobs when 32-year-old hotel shuts

The Gazette

Published: 8 hours ago

After 32 years under three banners, the hotel currently named Omni Mont-Royal Hotel on Sherbrooke St. is scheduled to shutter on Dec. 10, the company said yesterday, throwing more than 250 people out of work.

The Omni Hotels chain, based in Irving, Tex., blamed "operating difficulties," including labour issues, for the decision.

But Karen Kaboudi, spokesperson for Omni Hotels, said in a telephone interview that before the final, irrevocable decision to shut down the 299-room hotel is taken, "discussions (with the union) have to take place."

In 2005, about 250 Omni staffers went on strike for nine weeks, winning an 11-per-cent wage hike over three years. The contract elapsed last month.

Management recently asked for labour concessions from the unionized employees, who voted down the request.

Kaboudi, though, could not say whether the 250 employees' wages in Montreal are high, low or average for the 39 four-star hotels the company operates in North America, or what concessions the chain is seeking or whether they would be enough to keep the hotel open.

Omni Hotels put the hotel up for sale more than a year ago, but is closing it despite not having found a buyer.

Opened in 1976 on a choice location as a Four Seasons Hotel, it was subsequently bought first by the Westin chain and then by Omni Hotels.

An industry insider who did not want to be named said the company advised its employees about Sept. 10 of its intentions to close the facility. This, he said, appears designed to respect the three-month notice required by Quebec labour law before shutting down a commercial enterprise.

"This isn't a little game they're playing," he said.

Kaboudi said "about a week ago, the (Fédération du commerce) union (affiliated with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux) did make contact with us for more discussions."

She said a discussion with the union is "certainly likely."

But Kaboudi couldn't say when discussions might take place or what possible outcome either side is looking for.

There are "other difficulties," she added, but said she could not be more specific.

Fédération du commerce president Jean Lortie did not return calls seeking comment on the talks.

William Brown, vice-president of the Association des hotels du Grand Montréal, said occupancy rates for the 16,860 rooms in the 75 large hotels his association represents dipped last month to 78.05 per cent from 81.6 per cent, and to 66.8 per cent from 68.7 per cent for the first nine months of this year, compared with last year.

But the decision to sell the hotel was made more than a year ago, he said.

On the Omni Hotels website, attempts to make reservations on several dates past Dec. 9 met with a notice of unavailability. But it did not say that the hotel would shut down.

"But at this point," said Kaboudi, "we're still closing on Dec. 10."

This hotel building isn't exactly in some far off corner in a bad neighborhood. I mean, c'mon, Sherbrooke street West at Peel street?! Can't get much more prime than that! And they couldn't find a buyer? I find it strange. Though perhaps the problems with the union and workers is not a big secret and turned many buyers off. I can't imagine this hotel is going to be abandoned for long. It'll be interesting to watch.

if the hotel closes for 6 months, employees have disappeared from the map. Another chain can buy and reopen with outsourced jobs.

While if someone buys it right away, he enherits all the bullshit from the current union.

C'est pas compliqué man :)

Omni Mont-Royal staying open

The Gazette

Published: 17 hours ago

The Hotel Omni Mont-Royal Hotel won't shutter after all. Irving, Tex.-based Omni Hotels said yesterday that it had signed a "long-term agreement (with) union leaders and ... associates." The deal resulted in a new contract signed on Nov. 6. The 32-year-old hotel, opened in 1976 by Four Seasons and then bought successively by Westin and Omni, was slated to shut down permanently on Dec. 10. Instead, it will now launch a "major, multi-phased renovation" late next year. The renovation project will remodel the 300 rooms. The announcement did not specify if management had obtained concessions from the 250 employees who went on strike for nine weeks in 2005, winning an 11-per-cent wage hike over three years. Omni had asked this year for labour concessions, which were voted down.
