Montreal's Time Square

J'ai écouté Blade Runner 2049 hier et je regardait les paneau holograme géant qui intéragissait avec les voitures volante qui passait et je me disait que si l'on veux faire un square similaire à Time Square, pourquoi ne pas aller une étape plus loin et faire un square interactif qui réagirait avec les gens et les voitures qui y passe. 

Un peu comme le pont Jacques-Cartier est illuminé de différente manière. On a déjà un début d'expertise. Après si une compagnie voudrait faire de la pub, elle pourrait en faire une interactive. 

Pourquoi faire comme les autres quand on peut faire mieux que les autres, Avec des compagnies comme moment factory et un bon bassin de gens spécialiste en Inteligence artificiel, il me semble que l'on a ce qui faut pour inover.

L'idée n'est pas nouvelle et ne relève pas de la volonté de la Ville. Ce serait plutôt à l'entreprise privée de prendre l'initiative puisque ces écrans lumineux seraient installés sur des immeubles privés et non publics. Cela implique aussi des amendements à la réglementation sur l'affichage dans l'espace public, notamment sur rue et je douterais que l'administration municipale soit très sensible à ce genre d'intervention pour le moment.

Pour contourner la difficulté, la possibilité que je verrais, serait qu'un promoteur créé une place privée ouverte au public, (genre Avenue des Canadiens). Une place entourée d'immeubles nouvellement construits sur lesquels un jeu d'écrans géants deviendraient une des attractions du site. Le site de l'ancien Spectrum aurait les dimensions souhaitées, suffisamment grand pour reproduire l'atmosphère désirée. Mais il faudrait que ce soit dans un environnement clos, c'est à dire entouré d'immeubles, tout en donnant accès par de grandes ouvertures sur la rue.  

Avant de poursuivre, il faudrait fusionner les fils.

Just by calling it `Montreal`s Times Square` makes this idea imitative and not visionary. Forget New York; Montreal itself must be the starting point. The use of neon and videos are common throughout the world; some major Asian cities have neon-lined streets that make Times Square look pale in comparison. Toronto has an embarrassing effort to emulate Times Square, but then, that`s  typical of Toronto. So, if the idea is to glam up Montreal. or a part of Montreal, to create a glitzy area that is neither imitative nor kitchy, it would be best to start from Montreal`s uniqueness. Yes, benefit from any outside experience , but don`t try to copy it; it will only result in second-rate quality.

Even if i'm not against the idea proposed in this thread, it should be done Montréal's way or no way.

Since Montreal has strengths in projecting high tech images/video perhaps that should be a large part of it also beside neon. Also there’s new 3D holographic type advertising emerging now.. domething else that might be distinctive if incorporated on a large scale. I think we could use our techno savvy to make it distinct and interesting and at night very dynamic, changing and colourful.

Based on examples like Time Square in New York, Shibuya District in Tokyo,  Piccadilly Circus in London, Dundas Square in Toronto, I defined my own criteria as:

• Must be by an open area
• Must be close to commercial sector
• Must be accessible by metro

At that, I have come up with Square Concordia, this is the area today:

Here is why I think that this is the ideal area:

• There are 3 large blind walls for the screens
• High density of 24/hour restaurants and bars
• High levels of foot traffic at all times
• Proximity to various festivals

There are already renovated squares on each side of the street. The pedestrian area could be expanded to the parking lot on the right. There's a back lane in the lower right corner where food trucks could enter by and park in the square. A stage could also be setup there for events like Crescent Street Grand Prix Festival, Fantasia Film Festival, etc.

Highlighted in green are areas where a screen could go, solid green are screens on top of buildings, the yellow is where I would put food trucks or a stage:

These type of squares a great tourist attractions, both Toronto and New York list them at the top of tourist attractions. I also think that having a second public area in the west of downtown for smaller festivals would be a great compliment to the bigger festivals east at Place Des Festivals.

I could not agree more with this post ... We need some more movement in our streets and big screens would be a great way to do it. Hoping some clever businessman will be reading this thread !

C'est ça dont on a besoin, je verrais bien la place des festivals devenir encore plus animé avec encore plus de projections interactives et artistiques alliant même de l'intelligence artificielle. Un ripoff de Time Square avec des annonces de Tim Hortons, non merci! Ce qui a été fait avec le pont Jacques-Cartier est un bon exemple. 

L'agrandissement du MAC et le déménagement du musée McCord pourrait être propice à ce changement.

Like I mentioned, I'm not looking to debate it, but rather "if we had to do it, where and how would we do it?" I agree for the most part with your opinion, but I think that an idea can be imitative and visionary at the same time. You can take a proven concept and put your own twist on it and end up with a good result.

There are other "big city" fads that have been copied in Montreal in recent years that have done just that. Examples include the giant Ferris wheel, bridge illumination and urban greenways (promenade Fleuve-Montagne). No one says that these are embarrassing imitations or second-rate efforts (well else than Luc Ferrandez ). Maybe because Time Square is so iconic, it gets a much stronger "copy cat" reaction.
