It doesn't come to your mind that Montrealers play out their talents outside the city core. Let's be fair here - just because Power Corp. owns a majority stake in Wealth Simple, doesn't mean Wealth Simple's decisions are made in Montreal. It's very much based in Toronto. Wealth Simple doesn't even have a Montreal office.

This is not to downplay Montreal in any way. It's just a fact. Power Corp. has majority shares in a bunch of high profile companies, many of which are based in other cities. Yes, ultimately they report to a Montreal based company, but their management and executives live and are based elsewhere. 

Montreal is doing great, but especially now we have to keep our eye on our direct competitors. If we stand around and pat ourselves on the back, we'll wind up stagnating.

Wealth simple is not a Montreal company but belongs to an ecosystem whose core is Montreal.  Being the major stakeholder is not insignificant. Any transnational (or multinational) company has multiple interests all over the world. Everybody knows it. The fact that Hélène Desmarais is  SCALE AI Co-Chair, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of IVADO Labs and Chair of Creative Destruction Lab MTL (CDL) is a testimony to the engagement of the Desmarais family in Monréal. Being in business requires acumen. It seems that on the Ai topic, Montreal is capable of leading the charge with homegrown companies and global companies and not comforting itself when picking up businesses who will certainly decamp (as HSBC did with the oilsands) when greener pastures will be on the map.  I am always surprised when I read people downplay our successes. What is normal in ROC suddenly become an anomaly (Bouchard, Godin, Coveo, etc). Let praise the Quebec economy strategy on this matter. With CDPQ and many stakeholders, we are repeating the successes of the multimedia and digital-oriented companies that define today Montreal as a global hub.

Will.i.am investit dans une entreprise montréalaise en intelligence artificielle

L'artiste et entrepreneur américain Will.i.am, tête d'affiche du groupe Black Eyed Peas, devient investisseur du fournisseur d'intelligence artificielle montréalais Stradigi AI.

L'annonce a été faite il y a une heure dans le cadre de l'événement C2 Montréal, en présence de Will.i.am. Le montant investi n'a pas été dévoilé.

La participation de l'artiste ne sera pas passive. Will.i.am compte venir régulièrement à Montréal. Il agira à titre de consultant pour l'entreprise de 120 employés née en 2014 qui pousse une nouvelle plateforme pour les organisations baptisée Kepler.

«J'avais l'habitude de venir souvent ici de 1998 à 2009, à l'époque de mon autre carrière, a raconté Will.i.am en conférence à presse. On ne se parlera pas par FaceTime. Mon rôle dans l'entreprise est de m'assurer qu'on mette l'humain au coeur du développement. L'intelligence artificielle peut nous aider à devenir de meilleures personnes. Mais on a besoin d'être guidés, car ça peut avoir un grand impact sur la société. En affaires, l'argent vient habituellement en premier. Mais ce ne doit pas être le cas ici.»

Pourquoi avoir approché Will.i.am? «Il est innovant en musique et en technologie, répond Basil Bouraropoulos, cofondateur et chef de la direction de Stradigi AI. Sa présence va nous aider dans notre croissance. Il comprend les questions d'éthique et de biais.»

Président de I. AM+, Will.i.am a été fondateur et actionnaire de Beats Electronics avant que l'entreprise ne soit rachetée par Apple pour 3,2 milliards US.
