Are we the only city in the G-20 that doesn’t bother painting Tenji blocks?? Wtf is up with just letting them rust, installing them rusty, and then letting them continue to rust? Honestly never seen that anywhere else in the world. We are a distinct society indeed.

En fait c'est un procédé appliqué sur le métal afin qu'il "rouille" et ça le protège ainsi. C'est très à la mode en déco extérieure et utilisé en architecture moderne aussi. C'est pourquoi ils l'utilisent à la grandeur sur Peel ainsi que dans les fosses autour des arbres. Il n'y a pas de peinture qui écaille et le métal ainsi rouillé "exprès" selon ce procédé peut rester comme ça pendant des années sans perdre sa teinte "orangée", tout en protégeant la surface.

I know, just like manhole covers. Cast iron develops patina that protects it (eventually); I’ve just never seen the Tenji blocks left “au naturel” in other cities. Perhaps it’s a good trade-off — lower contrast in exchange for less maintenance — in a city with much more aggressive snow removal methods than anywhere else. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Some older Tenji blocks that i've seen in Montreal had a yellow plastic coating, after the chenillette rushed on them most were torn apart. This will prove much more resistant.
