I think you proved my point though. Multinationals can't put all their eggs in one basket for a variety of reasons. Neither can Bombardier.

 

You are right.

 

Now, Downsview is a highly valuable piece of land (+ higher property taxes), and the GTA labour costs are very expensive. Sooner or later, Q400 (and later the Globals chain) will have to move to a more cost efficient location...wherever it might be...Plattsburgh, Trois Rivieres, Mexico, Morocco...

 

It also seems that Bombardier don't get much political goodies from Ontario/the ROC anyways (for employing Ontarians in Thunder Bay/UTDC and Downsview). It's still perceived as a Quebec only business, thus receives that anti-Quebec BS we usually receive from our "friendly" voisin Canadiens. (GM multi billions bailout was ok 100% thought:banghead:)

Add Kingston Ontario facility to your list. Je ne serai pas surpris que l'on construisent l'eventuelle SLR a Kingston.

Also add the billions of dollars from Atomic Energy of Canada mostly spent in Ontario for subsidies for atomic reactor in that province and the only one left out of ontario at Pointe Lepreux N.B.

I don't think Bombardier should get a penny of federal handouts. HOWEVER, there is a way to properly feed them the necessary funds though in a more mutually beneficial process: have them compete in certain upcoming defense contracts.

 

A) FWSAR project. This is a perfect fit for a slightly modified version of their Dash-8. This is an idea that has been floated by several think tanks already.

 

B) Maritime Patrol. Canada will soon need to replace its fleet of aging patrol aircraft. Bombardier has teamed up with Boeing for the CL-605 MSA concept which uses a CRJ airframe for the basis of an inexpensive but very versatile MPA that uses existing technologies.

 

Et voila. Two key programs that Bombardier could easily win which Canada could use to leverage home grown companies and NOT give out a corporate welfare cheque without a net ROI.
