  With construction of the Edmonton Arena District well under way, the footprint of this neighbourhood is already taking form. By fall of 2016, the Edmonton Oilers will be playing in Rogers Place Arena, and the Winter Garden, Community Rink, the first office tower, and a number of new parkades will all be open.

  Expanding on the current construction of the Edmonton Arena District, exciting new opportunities will begin to unfold. The Delta Hotel, the second office tower, condominiums, rental apartments, and more retail attractions are set to join the Edmonton skyline. At the core of the EAD, the public square will become the centre of energy connecting citizens to all the amenities.

The Edmonton Arena District is being developed by a joint venture between Katz Group and WAM Development Group. The EAD Joint Venture is working with the City of Edmonton to develop a sustainable, vibrant, well-designed and accessible downtown area and realize the goals of the Capital City Downtown Plan.

 

 

 

 

Katz Group is one of Canada’s largest privately-owned enterprises with operations in pharmacy, sports & entertainment and real estate development. Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG) delivers leading sports, entertainment and special event programming to fans and patrons in Canada and the United States. OEG owns the 5-time Stanley Cup Champion Edmonton Oilers and will operate Rogers Place.

I was so impressed whenI saw the new arena under construction in Edmonton on TV earlier this week. I find organic shapes so much more interesting than big boxes.

J'ai passé une bonne partie de 2016 à Edmonton, pour le travail. La première fois que je vivais au Canada anglais. C'est une ville très étendue pour sa population. J'ai pris quelques photos qui pourraient être d'intérêt pour le forum. Les voici :

Le centre-ville, vu de la rive sud de la rivière Saskatchewan. Ils viennent de fermer l'aéroport qui se trouvait à côté du centre-ville et ont enlevé la limite de hauteur. L'immeuble Stantec sera deux fois plus haut que le plus élevé des édifices qu'on voit sur la photo.

 

La rivière a creusé une profonde vallée, qu'ils ont aménagé en parc. Ils auraient pu faire une belle promenade côté sud de la vallée, avec vue spectaculaire sur le centre-ville, bordée de restos. Malheureusement, c'est résidentiel avec quelques tours à condo. Sur la photo, on voit la vallée et les tours, tout à droite de la photo.

Le quartier le plus intéressant à mon avis est Old Strathcona, au sud du centre-ville, de l'autre côté de la rivière. De grands ormes bordent les rues avec un effet de cathédrale. Dommage qu'on ait perdu nos ormes à Montréal. Voici l'effet que ça donnait sur le Plateau Mont-Royal il y a 50 ans. 

C'est un quartier relax, comme le gros chat gris d'un voisin, avec une belle rue commerçante (pas de photos) la Whyte Avenue.

C'est une ville fonctionnelle. Les immeubles de grand intérêt son rares. On trouve le musée d'art et l'hôtel de ville, à côté.

Ils ont une ligne de train léger nord-sud qui se dédouble dans sa partie nord, pratique quand on vit tout près. Elle est souterraine au centre-ville et à passages à niveau ailleurs. Ils sont en train d'agrandir, en ajoutant une ligne qui va vers le sud-est. Mais ils font l'erreur de la construire à niveau au centre-ville. Dans la photo ici, on voit le train traverser la rivière et entrer en souterrain, pour rejoindre le centre-ville.

Ils ont un petit train touristique qui relie le centre-ville à Old Strathcona, en passant sur un vieux pont de fer, illuminé la nuit. 2e photo: vue du train, en passant sur le pont.

 

Edmonton a quelques horreurs, comme toute autre ville. En voici une, des années 1980 (en arrière plan, à droite de la photo). C'est l'immeuble du gouvernement fédéral, qu'on appelle là-bas le Pink Palace.

En résumé, rien d'extraordinaire mais certain points d'intérêt. Je discutait avec un urbaniste et il me confirme que les mentalités se transforment. On le voit dans les nouveaux aménagements, plus conviviaux.
