The latest UNWTO report has confirmed the continued growth of international tourism, with the number of international tourists reaching 781 million between the months of January and August - 36 million more than the same period in 2013.

Toronto And Montreal Are The Best Cities To Live In, According To The Economist

Toronto and Montreal might have a longtime rivalry, but one thing is for sure — they are both incredible places to live.

The Economist's Intelligence Unit (EIU) Safe Index 2015 released on Monday, which rates the safety of major cities all over the world, placed Toronto in eighth for its safety measures (and first for North America), while Montreal came in fourteenth. But when it came to looking at where the best place to live overall were, Toronto was on top, and Montreal came in second place.

As the study explains, "Deciding where to live is a personal choice for many city residents. For some, safety will be paramount. Others will prioritise culture and creativity. Two neighbours may hold opposite views on democracy and the cost of living."

While the safety index looks at the five factors of digital security, health security, infrastructure and personal safety, the measure of where to live is based on EIU's other studies as well, including liveability rankings, worldwide cost of living, business environment rankings, democracy index and global food security.

The safest city overall was Tokyo, thanks to its score in digital security, which takes into account how often identity theft occurs, the security of digital technology and other factors. As well, despite having the world's largest urban population, Tokyo also came in third for personal safety, after Singapore and Osaka.

Vancouver, which has ranked highly in many city studies over the past few years, including global reputation, did not appear on the EIU's list. Scandinavian cities,which generally take the top spots on lists, are also missing, apparently thanks to their high cost of living.

Centres financiers: Montréal perd des galons

Après avoir gravi plusieurs échelons ces dernières années, Montréal recule de quelques crans au palmarès international des «centres financiers» établis par les firmes d'analyse Z/Yen et Long Finance, de Londres, mis à jour récemment et dont La Presse a pu prendre connaissance.

 

La place financière de Montréal se maintient dans le top-20 mondial de ce palmarès annuel. Mais elle est cotée maintenant au 18e rang, deux crans de moins que la 16e place qu'elle s'était vu attribuer depuis deux ans.

 

Ce classement de S/Yen et Long Finance est établi à partir d'un relevé d'opinions et de commentaires effectué annuellement auprès de 2 280 professionnels de la finance de partout dans le monde.

 

Dans ce classement, la position attribuée à Montréal s'était rehaussée considérablement du 26e rang, il y a cinq ans, jusqu'au 16e rang en 2013 et 2014.

 

Cette année, toutefois, la place financière de Montréal se retrouve rétrogradée au 18e rang, à l'avantage surtout de Francfort et du Luxembourg, qui ont progressé le plus depuis un an dans le top-20 mondial des centres financiers.

 

Au Canada, aussi, Montréal se retrouve au 3e rang du palmarès des centres financiers, derrière Toronto (11e au monde) et Vancouver, qui a été rehaussée du 17e au 15e depuis un an.

 

En contrepartie, la métropole de l'Alberta, Calgary, subit les contrecoups du krach pétrolier de l'an dernier sur son appréciation comme centre financier. Elle se retrouve recalée au 33e rang dans le palmarès 2015 par rapport au 17e rang qui lui avait été attribué lors des deux années précédentes.

 

Pour les Amériques, Montréal se classe désormais au 8e rang parmi les 17 villes qualifiées comme centre financier, un rang de moins que sa notation de l'an dernier.

 

Dans les «profils» attribués à chaque ville par les participants à l'enquête, Montréal conserve son statut de «centre financier établi d'envergure transfrontalière», aux côtés de Chicago et de Boston, notamment.

 

En comparaison, même si elle devance maintenant Montréal dans le palmarès mondial, Vancouver bénéficie encore que d'un statut de «centre financier établi d'envergure régionale». Un statut semblable de «centre financier régional et spécialisé» est attribué à Calgary, en raison de sa prédominance dans l'industrie pétrolière et gazière.

 

Par ailleurs, sans surprise, Toronto demeure le seul «centre financier d'envergure mondiale» attribué au Canada, et l'un des deux seuls -avec New York- reconnus dans toutes les Amériques.

 

Chez le regroupement Finance Montréal, on considère que l'évolution de ce palmarès mondial des centres financiers démontre l'importance de «continuer à bien identifier et développer les atouts distinctifs de Montréal comme place financière, plutôt que de chercher à se comparer à des centres dominants comme Londres et New York.»
