how about building a metro line that goes to Dorval and serves the west island (cote vertu isn't too far from Dorval)? naw that makes too much sense

 

Makes too much sense until you actually start thinking about it.

 

A metro extension running through unpopulated lands straight from Côte-Vertu to the Dorval terminus would need to be about 10km long. That's the same length as the entire blue line!

 

We're talking about a $2.5 billion expense, minimum. (10 km * $250M/km).

 

And even if we had that kind of money, it already takes about half an hour to get from downtown to Côte-Vertu, now you're adding another 15 minutes.

 

45 minutes to get from downtown to the airport by metro? Thanks but no thanks.

The link between Trudeau and Downtown needs to be fast. Going through the whole orange line is a massive waste of time.

 

The new West Island LRT project ending at Pointe-Claire and going under Trudeau is the best option. It's underway, just be patient. There will be a formal announcement around this date next year.

most cities including NYC have a special train running on the same track as regular service trains that go and come directly from the airport (the journey wouldn't take more than 20 minutes non stop) and when has the west island become unpopulated?, no one is saying the line should stop at Dorval and not continue westward

What I was saying is, if it's going to cost the same (upwards of $2.5 billion), it's better to build a dedicated line which will serve central West Island (between the Vaudreuil and Deux-Montagnes lines) rather than have a Metro extension from Côte-Vertu to the airport.

I try to figure out why in north america it's so expensive to build infrastructures when we compare with Europe.

What I was saying is, if it's going to cost the same (upwards of $2.5 billion), it's better to build a dedicated line which will serve central West Island (between the Vaudreuil and Deux-Montagnes lines) rather than have a Metro extension from Côte-Vertu to the airport.
