Seeing the hype/media hysteria over the Raptors clearly depicts why Montreal needs to get on the North American professional sports map. Nobody is talking the NHL final - and nobody in the US seems to care (or Canada for that matter).

For those who want to see Montreal in the conversation again, we need to find a way to attract the MLB/NBA to Montreal. Let's stop this "we are Montreal, we're unique and charming in our isolated way" nonsense.

I think becoming a clone of Phoenix or Kansas City or Cleveland is to high a price to pay to get new sport teams.

From a league's standpoint, you're in essence selling equity of your overall league and you're selling a portion of the growth opportunity outside of that market... you're selling the growth opportunity in Africa. I think what we would be looking at if we're expanding is not necessarily the short term benefit of an expansion fee but is it additive in the long term. Is that franchise adding to the footprint of the league that the current 30 teams dont. So that in essence would be the analysis.

Hmmmm.

Montreal launches new professional American basketball franchise

Ty Jadah

Montreal is preparing to launch a new American basketball franchise.

While speaking with Daily Hive, Canadian basketball icon Juan Mendez announced the arrival of a new Montreal-based professional team that will play American rivals in The Basketball League (TBL).

Founded by Evelyn and David Magley, the TBL has 44 franchises spread out across the United States. Montreal will become the league’s first expansion into Canada.

The arrival of the TBL in Montreal will allow local players and fans to enjoy some of America’s best basketball talent at a time when the TBL says, “basketball is more popular than ever.”

According to the TBL, basketball is the world’s fastest-growing sport with over one billion fans and has the second-highest number of professional teams across the globe.

More than 350,000 young people between the ages of three and 17 play basketball in Canada and Montreal is currently home to four NBA players: Chris Boucher and Khem Birth of the Toronto Raptors, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Luguentz Dort, and Karim Mané of the Delaware Blue Coats (the Philadelphia 76ers affiliate).

Mendez, the yet-to-be-revealed Montreal team’s new general manager, says the “love for basketball in this city keeps growing every day.” Mendez — who played with the Canadian national basketball team and several pro teams overseas — says the “arrival of a TBL team will give local talent a real chance to shine.”

The Canadian basketball legend adds the new Montreal team will allow the city’s best players to stay in their hometown rather than play in Europe. “This team will mean we keep the best our city has to offer gith here — and let them face off against rivals across the USA.”

Montreal’s team will play its inaugural season in 2023 at Pierre Charbonneau Arena, welcoming up to 1,5000 fans per game. A portion of the team’s profits will be donated to the Foundation Hospital Sainte-Justine. Mendez says when the Magleys founded the TBL, their goal was to give back to the community. The Canadian basketball icon says “it’s ours too” and that as GM, he’ll continue to “concentrate our charitable efforts on the great work being done by Saint-Justine.”

Every TBL game and event is available to be viewed worldwide on TBLTV.tv.

The name and logo of the new Montreal franchise will be revealed in the coming weeks. Stay tuned, Montreal sports fan.

NBA commissioner says Vancouver and Montreal are expansion options

Al Sciola

With Canada winning medals on the world’s stage and continuing to host successful NBA events year after year, expansion up north seems to be more of a matter of when than if at this point.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver added fuel to the maple-leaf-shaped fire while being interviewed on the Boston Celtics’ broadcast during Monday’s game against the New York Knicks. After basically confirming that the NBA will expand once new television deals are in place, Silver spoke of Canada’s potential, using the Raptors’ success as an example.

“It’s interesting. We, of course, had a team in Vancouver, ended up moving to Memphis. That’s become a great basketball market,” he said. “I will say the Toronto Raptors have done a good job… of making themselves Canada’s team.”

The commissioner then named two cities that have been making waves as potential markets for teams.

“I know there’s interest from Montreal. We’ve heard from them,” he explained. “There’s still ongoing interest in Vancouver.”

“We have, I think, close to 25 players from Canada now in the NBA. Look how strong their national team has become. It began so much as a hockey market when we first expanded there, young people love basketball now… There will be more opportunity over time,” Silver added.

Both Montreal and Vancouver hosted preseason games to great success last month. And players and coaches at both events made comments that got fans excited about the future.

“It was almost like it was a real NBA game. Not almost. It definitely felt like it was a real NBA game,” the Oklahoma City Thunder’s star Canadian player, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, said of the atmosphere at the Bell Centre before proclaiming that “the NBA should put a team here.”

Meanwhile, Raptors head coach Darko Rajaković said something to the same effect to the folks in BC.

“It’s an amazing city, in my opinion, it really deserves to have [an] NBA team one day,” the bench boss told reporters at Rogers Arena. “But until that day, we’re very happy with the support that we’re getting here.”

Although expansion could take time, Canada, which has produced more NBA players than any country outside the US, seems to only be falling deeper in love with basketball in the meantime.
