Former Nordiques owner, mayor meet NHL Commish

Quebec City’s mayor and the former owner of the Quebec Nordiques met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman Friday in New York City, the French-language television network LCN has reported.

 

According to the report, Mayor Régis Labeaume and Marcel Aubut discussed the possibility of Quebec City getting a new NHL team.

 

The meeting took place as rumours are swirling about a new arena to be built to replace the old Colisée, where the Quebec Nordiques played from the time they were established in the World Hockey Association in 1972 until the franchise was sold and moved to Colorado in 1995. At the time, Aubut wanted the provincial government to chip in the funds needed to build a new arena.

 

Bettman has said that building a new arena would be a key to establishing a new franchise in Quebec City.

 

LCN reported an announcement either about the arena or a new NHL franchise could come next week.

NHL return for Quebec City?

MOSCOW - After a long discussion with National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman last Friday, Quebec premier Jean Charest says he believes the NHL will return to Quebec City.

 

According to the premier, Bettman is "sincere" and wants to see a franchise return to the former home of the Nordiques. Charest noted that the "planets are aligned" in such a way that the profitability of a new professional team is no longer a question for him.

 

CHAREST OPTIMISTIC

 

Charest is in Moscow for a round of economic talks with the Russian government and business leaders. The premier was asked by QMI Agency yesterday if he thought a deal would be worked out. "Yes, I think it will happen," Charest replied.

 

The conversation between Charest and Bettman last Friday focused on Quebec City and the possibility of bringing in an NHL team to the city nearly 15 years after the Nordiques left for Colorado.

 

"I sat next to him and had a long conversation during the hockey game. I questioned him about the possibility of getting a team in Quebec City and I found his reaction very encouraging. He seemed very open to me," Charest said yesterday.

 

Charest said he understood the NHL would have to "take steps to find an owner," but that this wasn't a real obstacle.

 

Weighing his words carefully, Charest reminded Bettman that Quebec City will very likely have a multipurpose arena that is due to replace the current Coliseum, a key element to snagging a professional team.

 

Charest said he explained to the commissioner that the long-term goal was to have the Olympic Games held in Quebec City and that world-class sports infrastructure was part of that plan.

 

SINCERELY INTERESTED

 

"I really liked Bettman's reaction because I felt he was sincerely interested in having a team from the NHL come to Quebec City," Charest said.

 

The premier said the likeliest scenario at this point would involve the transfer of a troubled team, such as the Phoenix Coyotes, to Quebec City.

 

"A hockey team is expensive," Charest said.

 

The Phoenix Coyotes are currently valued at between $200 million and $300 million US. But Charest said that his conversation with the Bettman was reassuring.

 

"They've established rules that give a better chance to cities like Quebec City. They've put a framework together that allows a club to be operated with predictable costs," he said.

 

Bettman also told the premier he's already discussed the idea with Quebec City mayor Regis Labeaume.

 

"I think it's going to happen. I say that by intuition. With these issues, (it's possible) to only see obstacles, but when you realize that the people who are directly concerned are looking for reasons to do it. And that's what I felt with Mr. Bettman.

 

"You can feel that he's optimistic and very open to there being a team in Quebec City. After that, it will take competitive operating costs for the arena," he said.

Il parle du Bettman qui essais de faire fonctionner une équipe dans le desert? J'aimerai bien savoir qu'elles sont ces règles qui faciliterait une ville comme Québec à avoir une équipe qui aurait probablement la moitié d'une province pour les encourager.

 

Ces pas des règles qui faut, c'est du gros bon sens. Winnipeg, Quebec et je suis au point ou même l'équipe de Balsilie serait le bienvenue.

Le Plafond salarial et le partage des revenus. Les équipes les plus riches (Tor, Mtl, NYR) donnes des millions aux équipes les moins riches (EDM, NASH, FLO).

 

Je ne veux pas faire le casseux de party, mais tant et aussilongtemps que proprio avec les poches pleines ne se pointe pas la face et accepte de payer 200 ou 300 millions pour une équipe, je n'y crois pas!!

tu paye 200 millions pour racheter une franchise dans le sud des etat-unis, tu utilise le 250 pour te construire un nouvel arena et tu encaisse les profits. du moins, a court terme...

Je ne crois pas qu,il s'est fait avoir. les Molson ont offert 600 millions, PKP en a offert seulement 450 millions$ C'est une grosse différence. Pi anyways, les Molsons ont une bonne réputation dans la LNH(Après tout, leurs famille a été proprio du Ch dpendant une quarantaine d'année)

 

Pour ce qui est des Nordiques et PKP, Si le gouv finance à 100% le nouveau stade, je n,ai pas de problèmes avec ça, mais j'espère qu'ils ne paieront pas l'équipe aussi! PKP a en masse de cash pour se payer une équipe!

 

Disons que le Gouv paie pour le stade, ça prends quand même un bon 250 à 350 millions pour acheter et partir une équipe. C'est beaucoup d'argent!
