BMW Welt by Coop Himmelb(l)au wins best of Production at WAFl Awards 2008 BMW Welt, literally “the World of BMW”, is a hybrid exhibition and automobile delivery centre designed by Austrian practice Coop Himmelb(l)au. The multi-functional centre is divided in 5 key areas: Premiere, at the center of BMW Welt, where the vehicles are handed over to customers on rotating platforms, from where they can drive out of the building via a generously sized ramp; Lounge, integrated into the roof and virtually suspended over the delivery area, supported only by the utility service shafts and a column; Forum, located in the north wing of the building, a state of the art Auditorium for up to 1200 people; Tower, in the southwest, a multifunctional area with restaurants, exhibition, sales floors and administrative offices; Double Cone, resting on eleven columns, a full-service event realm extending over several levels, including a stage with its own catering infrastructure, rotating platforms and infrastructure connections for events. Wolf D. Prix, co-founder and design principal of Coop Himmelb(l)au described the project: "The concept behind the design envisions a hybrid building representing a mixture of urban elements. Not an exhibition hall, not an information and communication centre, not a museum, but instead all of these things, along a passage organized under one roof and horizontally and vertically layered. A conjoining of urban marketplace and stage for presentations”. The WAF judges chose it as the winner amongst 12 shortlisted entries in the Produciton category and defined the scheme as “deeply indebted to Le Corbusier´s enquiring mind and dedication to experimental culture” adding that “Wolf D. Prix pursues new meanings and forms in architecture.” Incidentally BMW Welt represents the zenith of Wolf D. Prix’s fascination with turning clouds into architecture, as his words testify: "From the very start we’ve wanted to build cloud architectures and cities that change like banks of clouds.” The centre was also one of the 10 RIBA European Awards winners in 2008.   2. Salut tout le monde! Je suis présentement en stage à Santiago du Chili (depuis fin août), et comme mon stage est plate, mais que le pays est beau, je me suis dit que j'allais partager avec vous quelques unes de mes photos... Le smog est très présent à Santiago (c'est une des villes les plus polluées au monde), ce qui empêche d'admirer la ville et les Andes. C'est dommage, parce que sans ça, on aurait une superbe vue. Alors, pêle-mêle, voici quelques photos de Santiago: Tribunales de justicia (je suppose la traduction inutile): Regroupe le pouvoir judiciaire du pays, c'est-à-dire la cour suprême, la cour d'appel de Santiago et la cour martiale de l'armée. Santiago, vu du Cerro Santa Lucia: Il y a une colline plus grande qui permet de mieux admirer la ville, mais j'attends une belle journée claire et avec moins de smog (yen a moins l'été, là c'est le printemps) pour aller prendre des photos: El cerro Santa Lucia: L'autoroute panaméricaine et les Andes: La Academia de Bellas Artes: Je suis allée faire du ski dans les Andes (et je suis restée coincée là pendant 24h puisque le chemin était fermé...). Vous auriez dû voir les Brésiliens grelotter et dormir avec pantalon de ski, bonnets, gants et m'annoncer que c'était impossible de vivre à -30. Lendemain de la tempête (on se serait cru au Québec): Palacio de la Moneda: Siège du gouvernement qqui a été partiellement détruit lors du 11 septembre 1973, c'est également la qu'Allende s'est suicidé. Universidad de Chile: Il y en a un peu partout des statues comme ca dans la ville: Santiago "vu" du Parque Mahuida. Appréciez le smog: Museo historico nacional: Municipalidad de Santiago: Jugo de mote con huesillos (spécialité du centre du Chili). Grains de blé germés dans un jus de pêches séchées. Je n'ai pas encore réussi à déterminer si j'aimais ça ou pas. Tout ce que je sais, c'est que je n'ai pas aimé la petite intoxication que j'ai eu avec... Ça suffit pour aujourd'hui. Rafael Viñoly Architects inspired by cello in flexible performance space design For the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Rafael Viñoly Architects PC was tasked with providing a state-of-the-art home for the Philadelphia Orchestra, a flexible theater for multiple types of performances, and a major new public space for the city of Philadelphia. Sited along the Avenue of the Arts cultural corridor on Broad Street, the premises would further the revitalization of this primary north-south axis in the downtown area, as well. The resulting Kimmel Center treats the main program components as freestanding buildings on a vast indoor public plaza, Commonwealth Plaza, enclosed by a brick, steel, and concrete perimeter building and topped by an immense steel-and-glass barrel vault roof that floods the interior with natural light. The main symphony hall, the 2,500-seat Verizon Hall, applies the acoustic principles of a cello on a vast scale, creating a mahogany-wrapped music space shaped like the body of the instrument. A series of operable doors augment the naturally resonant shape by allowing sound to flow into reverberation chambers that occupy the 16 ft wide interstitial spaces between the Verizon Hall enclosure and its interior. A configurable acoustic canopy above the stage directs sound energy out to the audience while allowing the musicians to hear themselves clearly. The Perelman Theater, an intimate, flexible recital hall, can accommodate an audience of 650 for cultural performances and other events. Its turntable stage enables transformation from a conventional proscenium to a smaller stage with a concert shell and wraparound seating. A winter garden tops the theater and features striking views of the Kimmel Center interior and the city skyline. Commonwealth Plaza, a sheltered extension of the sidewalk, encourages the fabric of the city to flow into the complex where cafés, free performances, spectacular architecture, and the people who visit combine to create a dynamic civic experience. “I used to play the cello, and there is a very direct connection between playing the instrument and creating a space like Verizon Hall," says Rafael Viñoly. "When making music, the intellectual and emotional aspects of playing must be connected to the kinetic, muscular efforts involved. They’re the same thing. January 20, 2009 ARCHITECTURE REVIEW | COPENHAGEN CONCERT HALL For Intimate Music, the Boldest of Designs By NICOLAI OUROUSSOFF COPENHAGEN — It’s usually considered an insult to say that an architect designs pretty packages, let alone that he borrows ideas from a dead genius. But Jean Nouvel should be forgiven for resurrecting old ghosts. His Copenhagen Concert Hall, which opened here on Saturday evening, is a loving tribute to Hans Scharoun’s 1963 Berlin Philharmonie, whose cascading balconies made it one of the most beloved concert halls of the postwar era. And Mr. Nouvel has encased his homage in one of the most gorgeous buildings I have recently seen: a towering bright blue cube enveloped in seductive images. It’s a powerful example of how to mine historical memory without stifling the creative imagination. And it offers proof, if any more were needed, that we are in the midst of a glorious period in concert hall design. Like Frank Gehry’s 2003 Disney Hall in Los Angeles and Herzog & de Meuron’s Elbphilharmonie, now under construction in Hamburg, Germany, Mr. Nouvel’s new hall demonstrates that an intimate musical experience and boldly imaginative architecture need not be in conflict — they can actually reinforce each other. The Copenhagen Concert Hall has the ugliest setting of the three. In a new residential and commercial district on the outskirts of the old inner city, it is flanked by boring glass residential and office blocks. Elevated train tracks running to the old city swing right by the building; swaths of undeveloped land with tufts of grass and mounds of dirt extend to the south. Approached along the main road from the historic city, the hall’s cobalt blue exterior has a temporal, ghostly quality. Its translucent fabric skin is stretched over a structural frame of steel beams and tension cables that resembles scaffolding. During the day you can see figures moving about inside, as well as the vague outline of the performance space, its curved form embedded in a matrix of foyers and offices. It is in darkness that the building comes fully to life. A montage of video images is projected across the cube’s fabric surface at night, transforming it into an enormous light box. Drifting across the cube’s surfaces, the images range from concert performers and their instruments to fragments of form and color. This is the intoxicating medium of late-capitalist culture. You can easily imagine boxes of detergent or adult chat-line numbers finding their way into the mix. Yet what makes this more than an advertising gimmick is the contrast between the disorienting ethereality of the images and the Platonic purity of the cube. For decades architects have strived to create ever more fluid spaces, designing ramped floors and curved walls to meld the inner life of a building with the street life around it. The ideal is a world where boundaries between inside and out vanish. Yet Mr. Nouvel’s box is more self-contained and arguably less naïve: its solid form, bathed in tantalizing images, is in stark opposition to the sterile desolation around it. That impression grows once you enter the building, where more projected images blend with real, living people coursing through it. To reach the main performance space, concertgoers can either ride up escalators directly in front of the main entrance or turn to climb a broad staircase. Just to the left of those stairs are elevators that shoot up to the lobby and upper-level foyers, whose ceilings are decorated in fragmented, overlapping panels. As video images wash over the panels, the pictures break apart so that you perceive them only in fragments, like reflections in broken glass. More images stream across the walls. The effect is a mounting intensity that verges on the psychedelic. None of this would be effective, however, without Mr. Nouvel’s keen understanding of architecture’s most basic elements, including a feel for scale and materials. The towering proportions of the lobbies, for example, seem to propel you up through the building. When you reach the upper foyers, you feel the weight of the main performance space pressing down on you. At the same time, views open up from the corners of the building to the outside world. It’s as if you were hovering in some strange interstitial zone, between the banal urban scenery outside and the focused atmosphere of a concert. This complex layering of social spaces brings to mind the labyrinthine quarters of an Arab souk as much as it does a high-tech information network. That’s largely because Mr. Nouvel’s materials put you at ease: elevator shafts and staircases are clad in plywood, giving many of the spaces the raw, unpretentious aura of a construction site. The building’s concrete surfaces are wrinkled in appearance, like an elephant’s skin, but when you touch them, they feel as smooth as polished marble. By contrast, the main performance hall wraps you in a world of luxury. Like Scharoun’s cherished hall, Mr. Nouvel’s is organized in a vineyard pattern, with seats stepping down toward the stage on all sides in a series of cantilevered balconies. The pattern allows you to gaze over the stage at other concertgoers, creating a communal ambience. Because the balconies are stepped asymmetrically, you never feel that you are planted amid monotonous rows of identical spectators. Yet Mr. Nouvel’s version is smaller and more tightly focused than Mr. Scharoun’s. The balcony walls are canted, so that they seem to be pitching toward the stage. A small rectangular balcony designed for the queen of Denmark and her immediate family hovers over one side of the hall, breaking down the scale. The entire room was fashioned from layers of hardwood, which gives it an unusual warmth and solidity, as if it had been carved out of a single block. The result is a beautifully resilient emotional sanctuary: a little corner of utopia in a world where walls are collapsing. And it underscores what makes Mr. Nouvel such an ideal architect for today. Though he is a deft practitioner of contemporary technology, his ideas are rooted in the historical notion of the city as a place of intellectual exchange. His best buildings hark back beyond the abstract orderliness of Modernism and neo-Classicism to a more intuitive — and human — time.   7. Oubliez l'Italie, la France ou les États Unis. Aujourd'hui, l’une des destinations favorites des étudiants belges désireux de connaître une expérience à l'étranger n'est autre que le Canada, et plus particulièrement sa province de Québec. C'est le premier pays d'accueil des étudiants de l'UCL (devant l'Espagne), le deuxième du côté de l'ULB (dernière l'Espagne), selon des chiffres cités par l’Agent de liaison scientifique au Canada. Si la facilité de langue française peut expliquer cet attrait, lorsque l'on interroge des étudiants belges en plein séjour à Montréal, c'est surtout le dépaysement qu'ils mettent en avant. Ainsi, pour Sarah Louise, étudiante à polytechnique, "c'est surtout la jonction de deux mondes qui m'attirait. Entre l'Europe et les Etats-Unis. Il y a un peu des deux ici, c'est intéressant." Grands espaces teintés de langue française, plusieurs jeunes vantent ce rêve américain francophone. Le Québec a été l’une des premières destinations proposées par le BIJ (Bureau international de la Jeunesse) aux jeunes Belges francophones. Depuis 1984, le BIJ et son équivalent québécois ont permis à plus de 22 000 jeunes de 16 à 35 ans de vivre une expérience au Québec et en Belgique. Cela va de la réalisation d'un stage au montage d'une pièce de théâtre. L'important, c'est que le jeune aille au-delà de la simple expérience touristique. "Même si le carnet de destination du BIJ s’est bien étoffé en trente ans, les demandes pour des bourses au Québec restent élevées", explique la directrice du BIJ, Laurence Herman. La destination est attractive. Mais tout n'est pas simple pour autant. Anastassia est étudiante en philosophie. Elle est d'abord venue à Montréal dans le cadre d'un échange universitaire. L'expérience aurait dû durer quelques mois à peine, mais la jeune fille a décidé de rester. "Cela va bientôt faire trois ans que je suis là. Lorsque tout était encadré par mon université en Belgique, c'était plutôt simple. Mais quand j'ai voulu rester, cela s'est compliqué", confie-t-elle. Des conditions d’entrée durcies par le Canada Le Canada n’est pas l’Europe. Malgré de nombreux accords entre le Québec et la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, la mobilité entre les deux continents n’est pas évidente. Frais d'inscription élevés, démarches administratives lourdes... sont autant de freins à la mobilité estudiantine. Même la ministre québécoise en charge des Relations internationales l'admet : "Nous savons qu'il existe des facteurs irritants pour les étudiants. Nous avons lancé un comité pour tenter de réduire cela. Mais la matière ne dépend pas que de nous, nous devons négocier avec l'État Fédéral". Simplifier les échanges, les promouvoir, c'est aussi la volonté de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. Elle organise d’ailleurs ce mardi à Montréal un colloque consacré à la mobilité internationale en présence du ministre-président Rudy Demotte (PS). "Aujourd’hui, le monde a besoin d’échanges multiples, explique-t-il. Surtout dans un monde qui présente de plus en plus les différences comme des éléments de choc." Il faut dire que le Canada a encore durci ses conditions d’entrée sur le territoire en 2015. Pour la directrice du BIJ, Laurence Herman, ce n’est pas facile à gérer, principalement pour les jeunes qui viennent au Québec dans l’espoir d’effectuer un stage. "Le Canada a une politique d’entrée dans le territoire assez restrictive. Et il y a eu un gros recul en 2015. Tous les jeunes qui veulent réaliser un stage en entreprise doivent procéder à des formalités administratives très lourdes." Très lourdes, coûteuses et aux résultats incertains. Le nouveau gouvernement canadien du libéral Justin Trudeau a annoncé qu’il lèverait peu à peu ces nouvelles barrières.   8. J'ai eu le malheeur d'aller au Show de Radiohead vendredi dernier. Probablement le pire show que j'ai jamais vu de ma vie! J'avais hâte d'entendre les succès de Pablo Honey, The Bends et OK Computer, mais malheureusement j'allais être déçu toute la soirée...ils ont joué une seule toune de ces trois premiers albums (Paranoid Android). J'ai eu le plaisir de voir Thom Yorke se faire aller sur le stage en dansant un mix de Reggae et de "techno new age" pendant plus de 2 heures. I was soo fvcking disappointed that I booed his punk ass(Thom Yorke) and got the hell out of there before the show was over. What a waste of 90$.
  9. MONTREAL — U2 is putting up $3 million to expand Montreal's former horse racing stadium so it can accommodate 60,000 to 80,000 people for a show this summer. The fact that the band is fronting the costs of building the venue for the July 16 event is a testament to its love of Montreal, according to Jacques Aube, vice-president and general manager of promoter Gillett Entertainment Group. Gillett and tour promoter Live Nation have been working on the possibility of a Montreal date for months. The biggest problem was finding a venue big enough to host the show (including the 150-foot-wide (45-metres) stage, featuring a massive, steel spider-like structure) and comply with U2's request for an open-air stadium.
