  4. Montreal to host Fed Cup playoff By Stephanie Myles, The Gazette March 8, 2010 MONTREAL – Tennis Canada hasn't yet made an official announcement. But the International Tennis Federation has announced the venues for the World Group I and World Group II playoff ties, which will take place the weekend of April 24-25, on its Fed Cup website. Montreal's Uniprix Stadium will host the tie between Canada and Argentina. The talk had been that it was between Montreal and Toronto, but Montreal is obviously a no-brainer, given the high quota of Québécoises on the squad. The team won't be picked until closer to the actual dates, but it's very possible the entire four-woman team will be from Quebec: Aleksandra Wozniak, Stéphanie Dubois, Valérie Tétreault and doubles specialist Marie-Eve Pelletier. Toronto's Sharon Fichman also is in the mix. The last time Canada had a home playoff tie in World Group II, against the Israelis in April 2007, all four members of the team were from Quebec. But Tennis Canada decided to stage it in the tennis hotbed of Kamloops, B.C. Fan support was dismal; hosting it here will surely result in better support for the local players.   9. I feel a bit nostalgic, last year in December I went to visit my home country for the first time since coming to Montréal. I was shocked the moment I entered the "International" Airport of Damascus, I knew right away I was in a different planet. I thought that my initial shock would pass away, but no, it went from one shock to another. When I left Syria I was 7 years old, and I remember barely anything from there, while being born in Aleppo (second largest city), I lived all my life in a small town (300k) by the name of Al Qamishly on the border with Turkey and near Iraq. That city became slowly invaded by poor and restless Kurds. Everyone was telling me that Damascus was beautiful, modern, etc... well I can tell you that after seeing what Damascus was all about, I was not so thrilled to see the smaller towns and villages.   10. MONTREAL — U2 is putting up $3 million to expand Montreal's former horse racing stadium so it can accommodate 60,000 to 80,000 people for a show this summer. The fact that the band is fronting the costs of building the venue for the July 16 event is a testament to its love of Montreal, according to Jacques Aube, vice-president and general manager of promoter Gillett Entertainment Group. Gillett and tour promoter Live Nation have been working on the possibility of a Montreal date for months. The biggest problem was finding a venue big enough to host the show (including the 150-foot-wide (45-metres) stage, featuring a massive, steel spider-like structure) and comply with U2's request for an open-air stadium.
