  1. This is an older rendering but a lot of the architecture seems very similar to the newest proposal. I find it strange that so many things would be the same even with the new design. The taller buildings are changed but some of the lower structures are the same.
  2. Link to Video Presentation: http://media.pda.qc.ca/200808-GFC/20080815.htm
  3. I would find a residence in the tower to be a thing of prestige. I think that the view would be amazing and some of the spaces in the tower could be made into very interesting loft like spaces. How far did the construction proceed inside the tower before they stopped. Other then the windows and the elevators would this project require a large amount of construction?
  4. Do I understand correctly that the premises will be divided into to functions, a club and a concert venue? When the building functioned as the afterhours "Aria" there were two rooms, one upstairs that was smaller and obviously a theatre and a larger room on the lower level. Do we know which of the two spaces is to become the "nouvelle salle commanditée par TELUS"?
  5. I don't think anything should be added to the top of the tower. There is already too many ugly structures on the roof of the tower, there is no need to damage the profile of this structure.
  6. I believe that filling in the scare that the expressway has made on our city is essential. If this Project doesn't happen maybe they could cover the expressway with a park.
  7. When do we expect this new mac store to open? It is about time Montreal got this store. For those of you that really want an iPhone just order it on eBay and unlock it yourself. The phone can be unlocked for free and takes any SIM card.
  8. I agree that this is a great thing. The bigger GEG gets, the more shows and events we are going to host here in Montreal.
  9. With reduced protection for Gare Windsor, would it be possible to build a new entertainment venue between the Arena and the old station? I like the plaza located there and would hate to see it constructed on. What has been proposed for the Parking lot located to the south of Gare Windsor. Has construction already begun on that location?
  10. Thanks for posting these pics, their great. Are you involved with the Stadium? I would love to see the view from outside on top of the tower.
  11. This is a link to some great pictures of the Saint-Saveur. http://controleman.wordpress.com/2008/01/04/sauvons-leglise-saint-sauveur/ After looking at these pictures, I don't see how we can let another historic building get destroyed when there is a chance to create a link to our cities past in our newest hospital. What can be done to stop the destruction of Saint-Saveur?
  12. Is there still talk of another new roof for the Stadium? If so I think it would me amazing if they could make the third roof retractable. The article below is old and I haven't heard any recent news on this project. Article from the Daily Commerce News and Construction Record. http://www.dcnonl.com/article/20060417800 Apr. 17, 2006 SNC-Lavalin tackles Montreal’s Olympic Stadium roof project IRWIN RAPOPORT correspondent MONTREAL Montreal-based SNC-Lavalin Inc. is now the sole firm in the process to design and build the roof for the city’s largest structure. Four firms submitted applications following a January 2005 request for qualifications. Only two SNC-Lavalin and Janin-Atlas Inc. were found to have the financial and technical capabilities to complete the project. Both firms were then asked in July to present the Regie des installations Olympiques (Olympic Installations Board) with preliminary technical proposals. “Only SNC-Lavalin presented a concept,” said Sylvie Bastien, director of communications for the OIB. “Jamim Atlas withdrew. We want the builder of the roof to own it for 25 to 30 years, and therefore to finance it. We will rent the roof. “At the end of the process, we knew there was only going to be one at the finish, (but) we are disappointed because we wanted competition.” SNC Lavalin presented its concept last month. “The firm needs to validate many things, do the calculations,” said Bastien. “The next step is a financial proposal. They will have to tell us what the price tag is. “We need a new roof. The one we have doesn’t do the job and we cannot repair it.” A key element for a winning design is to create a roof that does not require snow removal or heating in winter to melt the snow. Bastien notes that SNC-Lavalin believes this is technically feasible. The firm has several months to come forward with a more detailed design. “It’s not a simple roof,” said Bastien. “It’s something very complex on a complex building and it’s huge.” The provincial government has not set any limits on the fee for the annual rent. “(But) it doesn’t mean that it is unlimited,” said Bastien. “It is something that we need to discuss with SNC-Lavalin should the project be pursued. If it is too expensive, we might decide to stop the project. There is no obligation (on our part).” SNC-Lavalin installed the first Kevlar roof and built the tower for the stadium, which was designed to hold the retractable roof (the first roof) — designs prepared by a French architect.
  13. Have they finalized the plans for the Hospital yet? Is it too late to integrate the L'eglise Saint-Sauveur into this complex? I think it would be a shame to loose another historic building in this neighborhood. http://spacingmontreal.ca/?p=447
  14. It is too bad that this is on hold, do we know why it is on hold? That would explain why there has been no recent signs of progress on the tower.
  15. Does anyone know what the status is on the construction that was being done in the Olympic Stadium tower? http://www.busac.com/index.php?lang=an&sect=3&offset=0&region=5&id=5733552 Judging by the 3D tour http://www.busac.com/previz/on the Busac Real Estate site, it looks like they are planning to remove some of the concrete panels on the side of the tower and replace them with more windows. Thus creating 20 floors of office space. The floor spaces in the tour were built with very high ceilings and windows that were much to high. I wonder if and how many floors they might be adding to fill up these large rooms. If anyone has anymore info on this project or pictures of construction of any part of the Olympic Complex I would be very interested. All Pictures are from Busac Real Estate www.Busac.com

What happened to the high speed trains that CN used to run? This image is from the Canadian National Railway.
  17. I like the idea of a mixed use project that involves a large concert venue. I do agree that the exterior architecture of the Nokia Theatre isn't the nicest. But I do think that the interior is a nice space.
  18. I think a new contemporary concert venue in Montreal would be great. A new venue The Nokia Theatre http://www.nokiatheatrelalive.com/ opened in L.A. recently. I think it is a great example of what we could expect in Montreal. The Nokia Theatre is a 7100 seat theatre. So a little bigger then the one we are talking about for Montreal. These large theatres are a much nicer way to see a concert then at the top of a large arena. The Bell Centre is great for large concerts. But it can be too big for smaller concerts, being one of the biggest arenas in the world, perhaps only second to the SCC Peterburgsky arena in St Petersburg Russia shown above. The Nokia Theatre can also be downsized by means of large curtains that close off the balcony areas. I would love to see a facility like this in Montreal.
  19. This is standard procedure for the naming of entertainment, sports and cultural venues. Some times we don't like the name of the company that is willing to put money into these projects. But without the private money some of these projects would never happen.
  20. What is the condition of the existing Planetarium building? Does it require a lot of construction to be converted for a new function?
  21. Looking at some old maps and photos I believe that Gare Bonaventure was located on the south-east corner of rues St-Jaques and Peel, the presnt location of the Planetarium and Peel street ended at the tracks behind the station. The north section of Peel street (formerly called Windsor Street) was joined with the southern section of Peel street (formerly called Colborne Street) after Gare Central was made into the primary train station for Montreal The front side of Bonaventure Station faced Rue De La Cathedrale. (near the 720 sign on the first picture) This is an overlay of a photo taken in 1930 and the present view from Google Earth. This is an overlay of a map from 1894 and the present view from Google Earth.
  22. I think that the Olympic Stadium is an amazing architectural achievement. It is unfortunate that the financial burden it caused tainted it's outlook for so many people. I hope that the New Planetarium complements the overall feel of the complex. The location of the new facility with direct access to the underground parking, a link to the Bio Dome and it's proximity to the Botanical Gardens and Insectarium make it a great location. It is now a question of the Architect to make this new facility complement it's surrounding. I wonder what Roger Taillibert would have constructed here. Unfortunatly he seems to be discontented with the longterm situation regarding the Olympic Complex. On his web site he posts his opinion on our Olympic Complex. http://www.agencetaillibert.com/uk/rubrique.asp?ref_PAGE=2172 The existing Planetarium was built on the site of the old Bonaventure Station. It is too bad that we lost this building. Could the existing Planetarium structure be utilized by the École de technologie supérieure?
  23. Attached is the fact sheet from the city regarding the location of the new planetarium. I think this is a great idea. What are they going to do with the old Planetarium? planetarium_proj_fact_sheet.pdf
