    Ste-Catherine is still busy, almost as busy as normal. I was there yesterday and it was particularly crowded with Christmas shoppers. There are always lots of people around Place des Arts and the Place des Festivals, too, and Chinatown is busy enough. But the rest of downtown is very quiet. The Latin Quarter is particularly sad, Old Montreal is sleepy, Victoria Square and the Quartier international are deserted.

    The last thing that corner needs is another plaza. Place des Festivals is right across the street. The little buildings add texture and variety, and their businesses are very useful. Take that away and you'll end up with a space that is dead most of the year.

    Yes, my point isn't that towers are bad, it's just that they can easily become very overbearing depending on their design and concentration. Because the scale is so big, when you screw up the design of a tower it has a much worse impact on the street than when you screw up a much smaller building. The best areas of Hong Kong have a mix of low, mid and high rises buildings. There are also a lot of "pencil towers" that are very skinny, and podium towers with a three or four storey base that gives the impression of a much smaller building. The areas I mentioned like the Mid-Levels and Wan Chai North are classic examples of development where you have lots of very big towers that don't care about how they interact with the street.

    Je pense qu'on s'est malentendu. J'aime les tours et je ne crois pas qu'elles ont un effet intrinsèquement négatif sur la trame urbaine. C'est juste qu'il est vraiment facile pour une concentration de tours d'être lourde et oppressive. La rue de la Concorde est un exemple. Ce n'est vraiment pas plaisant comme espace.

    Midtown est immense, il y a des quartiers avec beaucoup de vie mais aussi des endroits qui sont totalement fade et sans saveur même s'ils sont bondés de monde. Murray Hill n'est pas très intéressant par exemple. Idem pour plusieurs parties du Upper East Side où les tours massives et écrasantes nuisent à la vitalité du quartier. J'ai passé 10 ans à Hong Kong et on y voit la même tendance. Il y a évidemment des tours partout dans la ville, mais les quartiers avec le plus de vie sont ceux avec beaucoup de mixité au niveau de la rue. Mongkok, Sheung Wan et Tsim Sha Tsui = fascinant. Wan Chai North, Mid-Levels et Tseung Kwan O = banal.

    Je trouve que cet argument manque de cohérence. Times Square porte le nom du New York Times et Picadilly Circus est nommé pour la maison d'un célèbre tailleur. Assez spécifique. Pas si plate non plus. D'ailleurs, la Grande Salle de la Place des Arts a été rebaptisée la Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, tu trouves que c'est un erreur? La Place Émilie-Gamelin? Square Viger (nommé pour Jacques Viger)? Le boulevard René-Lévesque? La rue University aurait-elle dû garder son nom au lieu de celui de Robert Bourassa?

    Certes mais les quartiers les plus animés et vivants de New York, ce n'est pas le Financial District ou Hudson Yards. Y'a pas beaucoup de super-talls dans Greenwich Village, Union Square ou Greenpoint.

    For everyone who was like "what's one condo project in an entire neighbourhood like Parc Ex?" when this thread started in 2018... families are being evicted so their crummy 4 1/2s in a cheap 1960s building can be "renovated" and put on the market for $1,600. There's a real speculative bubble that hasn't even stopped with Covid. Parc Ex rents are becoming similar to Mile End even though the housing stock is much lower quality. It's crazy. This is a great move on the part of the city because there is a dire need for social housing.

    It's true that we lack the space downtown, but only one of those projects (Oasia) is in Singapore's CBD. The rest are in more outlying areas equivalent to Nun's Island or Laval. We don't have a shortage of space for towers, we just have too many suburban areas zoned for single family housing

    Le vent mais aussi les conditions atmosphériques. L'hiver dernier pendant une vague de froid le son d'Igloofest était tellement fort dans le Mile End que plusieurs de mes voisins pensaient qu'un gros party déroulait dans le quartier. Je crois que la ville a même reçu des plaintes de bruit provenant du Plateau. Paradoxalement le bruit n'était pas si fort dans le Vieux-Montréal.

    La nouvelle image de la Plaza me fait penser aux rues commerciales japonaises, qui ont souvent un auvent et des façades assez utilitaires, mais une ambiance vintage super chouette. Jolie-laide... comme on dirait en anglais.

    Le Décapsuleur is a tiny bit more expensive than other specialty beer deps but most of the sticker shock comes from the fact that they include taxes in their prices. 15% makes a big difference.

    The solution is usually to centralize garbage collection rather than have an individual collection point for each business. In Hong Kong, there are no big dumpsters. Instead there is frequent (multiple times a day) collection of waste that is taken by pushcart to a nearby garbage depot.     Even in English there's a distinction. Garden is a space designed primarily to contemplate nature, and it tends to be more actively managed in terms of plantings and maintenance. Whereas a park is a more general green space, often with a recreational element – space for playing sports, etc.

    There's a big difference between human noise and machine noise. Conversation and music can be uplifting. A constant mechanical buzz that is so loud it violates the law? Why should anyone put up with that? Imagine a car alarm going off 24/7 in front of your apartment. Same thing.
