Gee thanks for characterizing a whole industry that employs millions of people around the world and has done so for centuries as soulless. Living in the Plateau bubble must be exhilarating. But please do not take into consideration everything the financial industry has done for you, your family and everyone else. The fact that you were able to type such an ignorant comment from your keyboard to your computer into the internet world is thanks to the financial industry. The fact that Europe was able to recover after 2 devastating wars and become relevant again is thanks to the financial industry. But hey who cares about that. Montreal has the adult sweatshop video game industry. Who cares about the great things that have been accomplished thanks to the financial industry. If it weren't for the financial industry getting involved with developers and local businesses Ste-Catherine's street would still be a run down street full of boarded up store fronts. And yes there are quite a few positions who might seem soulless and meaningless to you but every industry has these positions. In fact it's these positions that keep these companies afloat. I've had hundreds of people do these administrative jobs you so quickly assume to be soulless however without these jobs my companies would never have survived. But you know what in the end you're right. Let's all quit our office jobs and go work at stores on Mount-Royal Avenue.

I don't know where you get this but RBC has 200 Bay Street as its head office. And BMO also has Bay street as its head office, however the legal office is in Montreal. And why is it that Montrealers always kick and scream when a HQ moves to another city and they blame that city. Did Toronto cry when Imperial Oil moved to Calgary. If an oil company leaves from Calgary to Houston do you think they will turn it into an end of the world event, no. HQ come and go, they move to other cities, shit happens. It's not the end of the world. Telus is increasing it's GTA employment, is Vancouver headed to the graveyard, no. Because Toronto and Calgary are doing what they can to attract new companies we always make fun of them for trying to progress and increase their economy. And when they steal one of Montreal's companies we call them thieves. Instead of blaming other cities for trying to grow why don't Montrealers look at their own city and ask why can't we keep them here. And if your answer is language and culture, it shows you know very little regarding corporations. Montreal needs to stop looking at the past and start deciding on its future. There are plenty of industries out there, its not just finance and communications.
  3. Lindberg, what type of work do you do in the industry and are you full time in NY? I was in Toronto for a filming yesterday and today and heading to Ottawa tomorrow, Canada day cake mmmmmmm. I will be heading for a night or 2 in NYC before i go back home, could be interesting to pick another ex-pat's mind.
  4. There's also another issue that many don't understand that is hampering Canada's "entertainment" industry. Canadians have issues with the rest of Canada regardless of where they are. If a movie takes place in Toronto they bi*ch and complain that Toronto is getting everything. This example works with any city. Will someone in Halifax spend money to watch a movie about life in Vancouver? Will someone in Calgary go see a movie about Montreal. Will someone in Quebec City go see a Toronto movie? In all these situations the majority of the time the answer will be no. I don't know why this is. It could be a creation by the media by separating the country the way they have over the last few decades. In all seriousness, how many of you went to see Scott Pilgrim? Now replace Toronto with Chicago in that movie and let's see how many would have gone. And don't say "no i wouldn't have gone" because you can't predict these things. We are all unpredictable, that's the beauty of it. Montrealers just as much as any other Canadian will go watch American movies over Canadian. Also, Canadian movies don't have to be in Canada or about Canada all the time. And then there's the other issue...............DISTRIBUTION.
  5. Not too offend you but your rant isn't based on much, only hearsay. If you think Toronto and Vancouver are eager to please America and Hollywood than you know very little about Europe. Eastern Europe will have the fastest growing film industry and that will be thanks to Hollywood and you're so called middle America. And Montreal is just as eager to please Hollywood, just look at this article and several more that have been printed in the last decade. And you might not know this but there is an increase in Canadian made movies and TV series that are not looking to please middle America, you just have to open your eyes. "What would middle America think and, Gosh they cant help think we're boring; let's set this tale in Chicago" But then again it seems obvious you already made up your mind. Is this truly what Americans think or is this just your perception of Canada?
  6. It's not on wikipedia because Montreal was only referred to as Hollywood North by the Gazette. Like i said a Montreal media creation. Just to give you an example, the worst year in Toronto in the past decade saw about $600 million spent. On a good year it's over a billion. Vancouver has seen the most money spent in 9 out of the last 11 years. Toronto's top 3 movies this year, Cosmopolis, Pacific Rim & Total Recall will alone generate more money than all of Montreal's industry. Ornello Mastrocola, in layman's terms i do budget consulting for films and tv series. Used to be more involved in the field but i'm trying to work less and less now. I left Montreal a long time ago, but i still try my best to represent the city within the industry.
  7. I'm not offended. I'm also at the beach right now so don't wanna do to much research. There's a whole article about Hollywood North on wikipedia and several other sites. However, i do not want Montreal to become Hollywood North. I want them to concentrate on developing their own talent.
  8. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/27/science/earth/27traffic.html?pagewanted=1&_r=2 That is all that is needed to be said.
  9. This is my first post and i don't mean to laugh at this article but it's a joke. There was $1.5 billion in production spending in Vancouver in 2010. It's the 3rd largest production center in the world. Lions Gate Studios is among the worlds largest special effects stages. There was $1 billion in production spending in Toronto in 2010. Ontario is the only province to have a presence (office) in Hollywood. Let's not forget several insiders have proclaimed that TIFF is the most important film festival despite what Cannes officials might think. This assumption that Montreal ever was "Hollywood North" is nothing more than a Montreal creation. "« Les producteurs étrangers adorent le Québec, ils adorent passer du temps à Montréal, ils aiment l’atmosphère, la culture et notre façon un peu européenne de faire les choses. On ne retrouve pas ça à Toronto et Vancouver. »" This is the most ignorant comment ever. It's your typical Montreal is god's gift to North America comment that many hate. But then again i don't expect much from Canoe. I'm sorry for the rant guys and girls but i work in the industry and this article is a joke. Montreal still has a lot of work to do and this won't happen within the next decade. And i strongly believe that Montreal is better off on concentrating on Quebec made productions. Toronto is increasing it's Canadian made productions at a rapid pace even letting some Hollywood productions slip in order to promote homegrown talent. If Montreal tried to do battle with Vancouver and Toronto for Hollywood money it would only lead to a decline in Quebec made productions, which i think we can all agree it's not the best way to do business.
