The Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, Mrs. Christine St-Pierre; the representative responsible for Culture, Heritage, Design and the Status of Women on the Ville de Montréal Executive Committee, Mrs. Helen Fotopulos; and the Mayor of Saint-Laurent and Vice-Chair of the Ville de Montréal Executive Committee, Mr. Alan DeSousa, proceeded today with the official groundbreaking of the new Bibliothèque du Boisé (Boisé Library) in front of approximately 100 guests.

The ceremony unfolded in the presence of the MP for Saint-Laurent-Cartierville, the Honourable Stéphane Dion, and the MNA for Saint-Laurent, Minister of Justice, and Parliamentary leader of the government of Québec, Mr. Jean-Marc Fournier.

"It is always a pleasure to witness the erection of a new library. As a gateway to knowledge and culture, the Bibliothèque du Boisé will constitute a warm and welcoming venue that offers a window onto the world, and one that will offer the public extensive range of cultural services. The building will also house the museum collection from the Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec, which is indispensable with respect to supporting the conservation and development of this major institution," declared Minister Christine St-Pierre.

"This future library has not yet become a reality and it has already won a design award. The Bibliothèque du Boisé will be modern, at the cutting edge of technology and reflective of Montréal, a UNESCO design city. I am thrilled to once again be party to the outstanding results of the library renovation, development and construction (RAC) program that led to an architectural contest as well as the much-appreciated financial collaboration of the Department of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, and of our administration," Mrs. Helen Fotopulos added.

"Saint-Laurent administration has prioritized the construction of a new library for the past 20 years due to the severe shortage of space in the existing facility. The Bibliothèque du Boisé was designated a priority need for the Saint-Laurent population at the 2002 Montréal Summit," explained Mr. DeSousa. "On behalf of Borough Council, I would like to thank everyone who is participating in the realization of this new public infrastructure, which effectively responds to the needs of the Saint-Laurent community."

Mr. Dion expressed his pleasure at taking part in the inauguration of construction of the new Bibliothèque du Boisé in Saint-Laurent. He added: "located in the heart of the recreational-educational centre of the Borough, it will be an essential resource with respect to enriching school activities as well as the recreational activities of families that choose to settle in Saint-Laurent."

"I am thrilled that construction is underway on the Bibliothèque du Boisé. This future institution will symbolize the richness and cultural diversity of our community. The library will enable both young and old to expand their horizons in addition to acquiring new knowledge. The quality of life of the citizens of Saint-Laurent will be greatly improved," added Saint-Laurent MNA, Mr. Jean-Marc Fournier.

About the construction

On July 5, 2011, Saint-Laurent Borough Council awarded Pomerleau Inc. the construction contract for the Bibliothèque du Boisé, which will include an exhibition centre as well as the museum storage facility of the Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec. The gross total value of the contract is $24,717,377.17. Work will begin on August 2011 and will be completed in winter 2012-2013.

Project description

Covering a surface area of approximately 6,000 m2, the new building will be strategically located in a central sector of the Borough, specifically on boulevard Thimens, on the block created by the Raymond-Bourque Arena, l'école secondaire Saint-Laurent, the Centre de formation professionnelle Léonard-De Vinci, the Centre des loisirs, the bicycle path and parc Marcel-Laurin.

In accordance with the Montréal Policy on Sustainable Development for Municipal Buildings, Saint-Laurent is seeking Gold level LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

In 2009, the Bibliothèque du Boisé was the topic of an architectural contest headed by Mrs. Lise Bissonnette. The contest was won by the consortium of the teams at Cardinal Hardy/Labonté Marcil/Éric Pelletier Architectes/SDK et associés inc./Leroux Beaudoin Hurens et associés inc.

This project benefits from the financial support of the Department of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women and of Ville de Montréal under the terms of the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal 2008-2011.

The cost of the library and exhibition centre is $25.5 M. For the library, $14.033 M is coming from the Entente sur le développement culturel entre la Ville de Montréal and the MCCCF. Ville de Montréal also invests $990,000 and the Borough of Saint-Laurent $10.477 M. As for the museum storage facility the cost is $4.15 M. The MCCCF will finance $3.55 M of this and the Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec will inject $600,000.
