There is more than enough road space for any festival use.  It would take another sovereignty referendum for an event to use all the road and park space in the QdS area.  What we're looking at will be one of the ugliest public spaces in the core of the city, rarely if ever used, and it will cost tens of millions to build and millions to maintain.  A much more expensive and permanent sapin de la honte. 

Instead, the city could zone the land to 100m and sell it.  With that money, it could do something interesting with some other part of the area - for instance, contributing it to a fund to cover the rest of the Ville Marie.  Or, alternately, it could build a few hundred units of public housing to begin the Habitations Jeanne Mance redevelopment.  Build there, relocate people from the Jeanne Mance project, the start the demolish, relocate, rebuild cycle.  

Instead, it's tens of millions for the park equivalent of the Place Vauquelin/McTavish steps/sapin de la honte.

I tend to disagree with you on a few points. This lot has been used for various festivals for years now.  Jazz fest, francofolie and others use it for smaller stages and what not. So there's already a "need" for that space, and we can only expect the attendance numbers to keep growing.

These kind of public spaces attract investments nearby. Look at Bonnaventure, developers are going crazy buying lots and building quickly. Although the city isn't making a profit directly, they will indirectly make a profit from land and condos being sold nearby.

Ce site fait partie depuis le début du plan de développement du QdS et je ne vois pas pourquoi on changerait sa vocation, puisqu'il fait partie des espaces publics nécessaires pour désengorger les autres sites, quand il y a foule durant les festivals.

En plus ce sera un merveilleux espace polyvalent qui sera éventuellement ceinturé par des immeubles tout le long de l'avenue Clark. On parle d'une esplanade qui permettra en même temps une sorte de promenade autour du coeur du quartier.

Chacun a droit à ses opinions, mais dire que c'est une idée stupide m'apparait présomptueux, d'autant plus que c'est le fruit d'une longue réflexion de la part du bureau d'urbanisme de la Ville, qui a, à mon avis, fait un excellent travail, notamment dans ce secteur particulier du c-v.

Montréal ne manque pas de terrains à développer, alors on ne grugera pas les précieux espaces publics qui sont loin d'être en surnombre dans la ville. Quant à l'idée d'un terrain de stationnement souterrain, le développement du Carré St-Laurent pourvoit finalement à ce besoin. Ce faisant la Ville a changé ses plans, ce qui lui permet de surcroit d'éviter d'avoir à accommoder la circulation automobile à l'intérieur du périmètre public. 

On ne dira pas que la formule est parfaite, mais dans les conditions on fait le mieux avec les éléments déjà sur place, avec un résultat plus que satisfaisant.

Disagree at 100% .  La place des festivals , le Parterre and this new place is perfect for our city.  It was awful before.  I am not sure that you went to la place des festival during Summer....and ask all the tourists and the workers of that area what they think of that part of the city....they all love it

La patinoire sera un plus, c'est certain. Je ne vois pas le problème. Il y a encore pleins de terrains pleins de mauvaise herbe qui attendent du développement! Ce secteur a encore bcp de potentiel,  même s'il n'y a pas de tour exactement là..

J'ai remarqué hier que l'édifice Screaming Eagle sur Saint-Laurent (qui donne sur Clark) était en vente. Quelqu'un a-t-il des informations å ce sujet? Sait-on s'il pourrait être démoli? Ça serait certainement une bonne nouvelle à la fois pour la future Place et pour la Main!

Ce serait une bonne nouvelle jusqu'à ce qu'on apprenne que l'acheteur est Mondev et qu'il fait la phase 2 du Myriade...

Il y a un gros potentiel pour le propriétaire du stationnement juste à côté de combiner son terrain avec le Screaming Eagle...

Souhaitons que nous ayons droit à une architecture acceptable, chose plutôt rare pour les derniers projets annoncés dans le QdesS (j'en suis toujours pas revenu du Smith)

Avec la finalisation de l'esplanade Clark, il ne fait aucun doute que tout cet alignement de propriété sur St-Laurent prend une grande valeur. D'autant qu'on est juste à côté du métro. Il y a donc un intérêt certain pour les promoteurs, puisque le quadrilatère est idéal pour le commerce comme pour l'habitation et à distance de marche des attraits principaux de la ville.
