Skyline de Calgary

Messages recommendés

I just got back from a trip to Calgary and I have to say the city is really booming; BUT, it's probably one of the most boring places I have ever visited.

There's nobody walking in the streets, most restaurants and coffee shops are closed on week-ends and evenings. Except for Stephen avenue and Kensington, which is where you'll find most of the street life.

First, a shot of the skyline from the Calgary tower (sorry for the bad panorama attempt). You realise how small their downtown core actually is when you're up there. I always thought it looked a lot bigger in pictures.

Now a picture of The Bow:

This picture gives you an idea of what Calgary looks like outside of the main core... almost nothing but surface parking lots.

I'm sorry to hear that your trip to Calgary was disappointing. It appears that you visited the CBD (Central Business District) and Kensington, and missed out the best parts of the downtown area.

Unfortunately the CBD is just as you described, it's all office buildings and with the exception of Stephen Ave is quiet after hours and on Sundays. It's something that we've been trying to improve, and will take some time.

The best places to visit are just south of the CBD in the Beltline area. Places like Scarth Street, 17th Avenue, 4th Street in Mission, and a few others.

If someday you are back out this way, please drop a note to the folks at the Calgary section of the SkyscraperPage Forum.

We'd be happy to offer tips on the places to go and what to do.

Just for a clarity, here are a few pictures of the areas around the downtown CBD. Not all of area outside of the CBD core is surface lots.

Your photo shows the area to the southeast of the CBD, Which truly is mostly surface lots, and that area is improving with various developments.

Hey, I noticed that my post was being read in the Alberta section of the skyscraperpage forum and I read some of the responses.

My post had to be taken into context, a lot of forumers on here we're complaining (rightfully) about the lack of construction in our city, and I was just trying to show that a real estate boom isn't everything.

With that said, I'm saying that I found Calgary boring, but I know it's still a fairly "young" city (in terms of its recent economic and population growth) and that things will improve over time. Also, I visited many most of the region and found many interesting places, but I was focusing more on the CBD in my post because I wanted to show that tall buildings don't necessarily make a city "funner".

Hope it clears things up.

Thanks for replying. ;)

I won't argue that tall buildings will make a fun environment. Many of us on the Calgary forum agree with that thought. Alot of us don't believe the CBD will be much more than it is; a cluster of office buildings, though some improvements can be made.

Calgary can be boring, and it can be fun, it all depends on what you make of it, combined of course, with your experiences. Many out of town visitors see the CBD, and that's what they remember about downtown. In that regard, having a dense skyline with tall buildings can be a burden. Calgary needs to better promote its vibrant areas, as there are some good spots.

My post was meant more to point out that the area around the CBD isn't all parking lots. :)

Thanks also for your reply.

I see you edited your post and the pictures are showing.... the first one (with prince's park in front) is amazing, some nice density right there.
