Well Quebec City may get Le Phare and now this for Ottawa. I guess that 65 stories is just too much for Montreal...lol!

Planning committee decides Ottawa is a 65-storey city

Ottawa is a 65-storey city, no matter what a community plan says.

That’s the view of the majority of planning committee members who voted Tuesday to recommend allowing a giant three-tower complex at 900 Albert St., near the Bayview O-Train station.

Councillors Jan Harder, Tim Tierney, Stephen Blais, Rick Chiarelli, Jean Cloutier, Allan Hubley and Shad Qadri voted in favour of planning amendments that would allow the development, while Jeff Leiper and Tobi Nussbaum opposed. Council will cast the final vote Wednesday.

TIP Albert GP (Trinity Developments, InterRent Real Estate Investment Trust and PBC Real Estate Advisors) proposes to build towers of 65, 56 and 27 storeys, soaring above commercial and office spaces. There would be 1,241 residential units, which the city expects would generate a massive transit ridership for the Confederation Line and Trillium Line.

The 65-storey and 56-storey towers would be the tallest buildings in Ottawa.

B+H Architects and GGLO Design are the architects on the project.

The city’s Bayview station secondary plan allows a maximum of 30 storeys on the property, but the official plan calls for buildings taller than 30 storeys to be within 200 metres of transit stations in mixed-use centres. A prime candidate for the official plan direction would be 900 Albert St.

This is how you do urban design. Plant super tall buildings next to public transport. It may not look pretty in relation to surrounding (lower) structures but its the way of the future.

Dans la théorie il n'y a rien qui empêcherait ce genre de tours hors du centre-ville en révisant l'urbanisme, comme à Ottawa avec sa limite de hauteur du Parlement.

Est-ce que le plan d'urbanisme de Montréal pourrait permettre de bâtir plus haut que 200 en dehors du centre-ville? Si oui, à partir de quelles limites territoriales?

Aucune, ni a Laval, ni a Longueuil

I agree - provided the infrastructure and services can handle an influx of residents and this often turns out to be a big if. Since these neighborhoods are typically low rise/low density as you've pointed out, they frequently don't have sufficient classroom capacity to handle an influx of students. Subway stations quickly become saturated if they're older systems that didn't plan for this type of growth. Even things like access to grocery stores and green space (other than the private condo terraces) can become an issue. I support the idea of intensification around transportation nodes, but I wonder if 65 floors (+ 2 small towers) is over doing it... Good news is Ottawa will do it and Toronto already has, so these will provide interesting case studies that we can refine in the future.
