Norwegian Air Shuttle postponing launch of Canadian service until summer of 2019

 

(Canadian Press) -- MONTREAL -- Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA is postponing the introduction of its low-cost transatlantic service to Canada because of aircraft delivery delays.

Spokesman Anders Lindstrom says flights to Canada that were expected to start this summer are now planned to start in the summer of 2019.

He says Norwegian remains "very interested" in the Canadian market and the delay will give it more time to introduce itself to Canadian travellers.

The postponement follows a delay in the delivery of the Boeing 737-800 Max aircraft that are planned for the undisclosed routes between Europe and Canada.

The airline is expected to compete with Canadian airlines like Air Transat, WestJet Airlines and Air Canada Rouge.

A more detailed list of competitors will include WOW, Icelandair, Level...   All of which could put further pressure on the AC/AF/BA/KL/LH/LX main cabins. AC has acknowledged this type of threat by starting up Rouge, and BA could counter in the same way if they buy up Norwegian Air Shuttle, which would put Norwegian under the IAG banner, which in addition to BA also has controlling interest in Iberia and Level. In turn, IAG's controlling shareholder is... Qatar Airways. 

In a sense, then, Barcelona-based Level is kind of an Iberia 'Rouge', which would partly explain why we won't likely see Iberia's own planes at YUL.   I'm sure there's way more to all of this behind the scenes than I'll ever know about.

The fact that they plan to use B 737 MAX tells us a little more about their plan. The range of this plane doesn't really allow for flights from Europe to go much more further than Toronto, doesn't it? That would mean that Montreal might really get a flight from them.

There is rumor IAG might buy them out so things could change for Canada if that happens. Also I heard there were  interested in flights from Guadeloupe to YUL. Europe seemed like more distant rumours. Who knows?
