WestJet announces intent to launch ultra-low-cost carrier

CALGARY, April 20, 2017 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced its intention to launch a new, ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) in Canada subject to agreement with its pilots and any required regulatory approvals. Service is expected to start in late 2017 with an initial fleet of 10 high-density Boeing 737-800s designed by the airline that first brought low-cost air travel to Canada in 1996. The ULCC will provide Canadians with no-frills, lower-cost travel options.

"Launching a ULCC will broaden WestJet's growth opportunities and open new market segments by offering more choice to those Canadians looking for lower fares."

I would hardly call them low cost, at best they match AC's prices. 

And in my opinion Air Canada on board product is far superior to Westjet's.

If I can fly from Montreal to Toronto, NYC or Boston for about $70-$100 round-trip that be great or even Montreal to Vancouver for $300 round-trip that be amazing.

Time will tell. Also if it works out, Air Canada / Air Canada Rouge will have to do something to compete.

I don't think it's possible, only the taxes and fees would be 70-100$ each way. That's why flying in Canada is so expensive.

Bon, le marché à bas prix / no frills canadien deviendra encore plus encombré. La prochaine étape pour WJ sera d’offrir des vols nolisés avec ces mêmes Boeing 737-800 sardinisés.

Mauvaise nouvelle donc pour les Rouge, Transat et Sunwing. (Il faudrait vraiment, comme consommateur, encourager Air Transat…)

Pas nécessairement une mauvaise nouvelle pour les lignes aériennes qui mettent l'accent sur les forfaits vacances/loisirs. Ce qui démarque les ULCC c'est le 'unbundling' tel que décrit dans l'annonce. Le billet EasyJet/veuling/Ryanair se vend pour 49 euros, mais ensuite c'est 50 euros la valise, 8 euros le sandwich whatever. Pour le marché nolisé destination soleil (p.e. Cayo Coco) les Rouge/Transat/Sunwing auront juste a initier leur propre 'unbundling', en autres mots offrir du 'option price building' aux passagers.

Oublie pas les frais d'atterissage ici au Canada. Comme le dit si bien mtlurb, 'taxes and fees would be 70-100$ each way. That's why flying in Canada is so expensive.'  

A part quelques prix promo chocs qui seront offerts à la naissance d'un WJ low-cost, je me demande comment WJ va se démarquer... Oshawa-Abbotsford à 129$ l'aller?   Lethbridge-St. Hubert 109$ le retour?  On ajoute la valise, le menu bistro, les frais aéroportuaires et les taxes et c'est rendu dans les 800$ round-trip. And oh yeah, the taxi to Oshawa.

WestJet fera l'acquisition d'appareils Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

Ces appareils permettront au transporteur aérien d'augmenter sa capacité pour l'Asie, l'Amérique du Sud et l'Europe

CALGARY, le 2 mai 2017 /CNW/ - WestJet a annoncé aujourd'hui avoir conclu une entente définitive avec Boeing pour l'acquisition de 20 appareils Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Cette entente comprend un engagement pour l'acquisition de dix appareils Boeing 787-9 qui seront livrés entre le premier trimestre de l'année 2019 et décembre 2021, ainsi qu'une option d'achat de dix appareils supplémentaires qui seront livrés entre 2020 et 2024. Le transporteur aérien a également annoncé que les 787 seront dotés de moteurs GEnx-1B de General Electric.
