Toronto is a decent city, but it is totally paranoic about whether or not it has surpassed Montreal in quality of life issues...and  most studies ut Montreal ahead of Toronto. Inevitably, in these cases as in this one, the Toronto media and national English media simply do not report on it. This feeds Torontonians` ignorance about the real status of their city relative to others.

MacMillan owner of Joe Beef.. I consider him very reliable.

Well, with the following quote, he seems to be living in 2012 :P

Citation

"I'd say these days it's a hard city to live in. There's definitely corruption, definitely crumbling infrastructure, definitely lots of mismanagement of public funds, but not really incredible growth over the years."

If you all care to read the CBC article, nowhere does McMillan say that Toronto is better than Mtl, or vice-versa. He is simply saying that a lot of exciting things are going on there and that some of his personal favorites are there. The headline "TO beats Mtl" looks like a huge overreach by the author/editor, based on the actual quotes presented. For all I can tell it could just as easily have been "Toronto catching up to Mtl", "Toronto not complete shit after all", or, yes, "Toronto finally consecrated as best food city in all known, future, and potential universes". Or anything in between. Because while he heaps some (likely deserved) praise on TO, nowhere does McMillan actually make a comparison between Toronto and, well, anywhere else really.

My take from this is that once again, it exemplifies this compulsive need by a certain bourgeois class in Toronto to affirm their city's status over Montréal. No skin off our backs in my book. (I'm referring to the "journalist" here, not McMillan who's obviously an ok guy)

Of course, it should also be noted that while the article itself is essentially content-free, the specific points made by McMillan are quite valid and well worth addressing. Not so that we catch up or stay ahead of Toronto or anywhere else, but simply so that Mtl can be the best version of itself. So let's leave aside what a few Toronto insecure snobs have to say about us and get to work fixing what needs fixing, shall we?
