Denis Coderre dropped the ball on this one. He totally mismanaged taxpayers money for the profit of the rich and famous, with the expected 'anything is good for an international event that will put Montreal on the map'. Typical tycoon conduct.

The small minded stuff in our city has to stop.

Could not have said it better ... we need a vision to put Montreal back on the map and we have to stop with the small-mindedness that permeates all decisions; 

While the rest of the world is thinking bigger, better, more ambitious ... we still get hung up on the height of the mountain, 'hating' on every initiative and beating the Hi/Bonjour issue to death ...

Certainly, some initiatives will be less successful than others but it is time to start thinking big. Alternatively, we can all just concede that Montreal will never make it passed its second-rate city status ...

Une ville internationale n'a pas besoin de se prostituer pour plaire aux grands. La FE était une bonne idée et j'espère qu'elle reviendra éventuellement. Mais ici le dossier a été piloté avec un total amateurisme, sans aucune préparation sérieuse et dans la précipitation. Il n'y avait d'ailleurs aucune urgence de sauter dans un train en marche sans s'assurer d'atteindre la destination avec succès. Au lieu de cela, la Ville perd la face et la confiance des payeurs de taxes est une fois de plus échaudée.

De toute façon il serait ridicule de piétiner le statut international de Montréal à cause d'un événement qui a mal tourné. A ce que je sache l'envergure de la métropole dépasse largement ce malheureux incident de parcours, qui a coulé son responsable dans le processus.

Dans un excès de confiance le maire en a fait un projet personnel et s'est peu soucié des conséquences, ni du manque de transparence ou de consultation qu'il avait lui-même promis dans son premier mandat.

Ironiquement le boeuf se croyant naturellement plus fort que la petite grenouille, l'a fait oublié de se méfier de son gros égo. Résultat: il a donné une performance lamentable, qui a été vite sanctionnée par la population, la grenouille ayant gagné par défaut.

Morale de cette histoire: ce n'est pas tout de vouloir promouvoir l'image internationale de sa ville, encore faut-il s'assurer qu'on n'y fait pas ombrage.

Je ne savais pas que Montréal attendait Denis Coderre pour figurer sur les cartes géographiques.

La dernière fois que j'ai vérifié, Montréal était première en ce qui concerne la tenue d'événements et de congrès internationaux en Amérique du Nord. (que quelqu'un me corrige si j'ai tort)

C'est pas assez international pour toi mark_ac?

Moi, je pense que Montréal, c'est trop français pour toi, c'est ça ton problème.

D'après moi, il s'agit du clocher de l'église Ste-Brigide, entre René Lévesque et Ste-Catherine, quelque part en face de Radio-Canada. Pour ce qui est de l'emplacement exact ?????

Montreal has been on THE MAP for over a century.  The Montréal that  former mayor Jean Drapeau so dearly wanted to «put on the map» represented another perspective of reality, and in a way, he was successful.

Nowadays, I believe that what is still making Montreal attractive worldwide is more a matter of its own character (which had been in existence well before Drapeau) than any particular events such as the Formula One Grand Prix or the Montreal International Jazz Festival.  Of course, these are helpful, but  they do not and cannot by themselves make Montreal  a true international city.  Any more events of that sort would not add much, and certainly not the comparatively insignificant E Formula. 

Let me quote (exact words/spelling)  the refrain of a song from Mouffe/Robert Charlebois  --title «Miss Pepsi»

J'ai toujours toute gagné mais sa ma rien donné

I much prefer efforts and initiatives that are conducive to real/substantive advantages to the city, such as higher education in science and  medicine, capital investments in airport development, lobbying for new direct air routes,  etc.  The rest will come, naturally.  

Ibiza is fun.  Montreal can be fun too;  but it can and must be much more than that.  This is the core of my message.
