REM (ligne A) - Discussion générale

can't stop thinking about this. some further observations:

1) this will be good for home prices out in all the suburbs connected to the rail. if a suburban lifestyle becomes more viable, it'll keep the pressure off homes in central montreal. every little bit helps.

2) the audacity of this project is impressive and really makes the tortured discourse around the anjou and yellow line extensions seem utterly contemptible. 1.5 billion to get serve another 120,000 people? it's appalling compared with this new proposal.

3) the caisse is a major world player in rail infrastructure, with major positions in keolis, eurostar, heathrow express, canada line and others. as we know from the magnificent experience of victoria square, they're world class professionals and i feel secure trusting that this project is for real.

4) the government of quebec seems to be completely behind this project, they commissioned it and they're promoting it. that means money and also that the caisse will have a clear path forward, something unusual by canadian or american standards (some town in ontario just refused a free light rail, that is impossible in today's quebec).

5) it is absolutely crucial that the stations at edouard montpetit and mcgill be constructed - commuters or visitors coming into montreal must be able to board all three lines without transfer, montrealers going to the airport must be able to use any metro line to access the new REM, these are crucial to reduce traffic on the metro, but also to make sure that this line is financially viable. i expect both the stm and the caisse will be working hard to make this happen.

6) it seems important that the 5-6 stops in montreal be integrated into the stm system in some way so that they can be used with a monthly metro pass without additional charge. if this means that monthly passes rise a little in cost, that's fair. a 5 minute trip from UdeM to mcgill/bonaventure would completely change system use patterns, relieving pressure at transfer points system-wide. it should have been built years ago, really.

7) finally, we should recall that this is probably north america's most ambitious current rail proposal. los angeles is building massively and a company in florida is building a new high speed rail line, but for per capita impact, neither of these will do as much to transform an entire region as will this one. amazing!

Wow !! Great comment !

I agree. The possibility to connect with the 3 Metro lines is a must.
