Movin' up: The view from Montreal penthouse

YUL

Where Laval-sur-le-Lac could be described as quiet beauty, YUL is bold and insists on being noticed.

Salesperson Carl Miller describes it: “YUL will redefine the city skyline. It will be visible from the South Shore and the Jacques Cartier Bridge. You will see the towers gleaming in the sun.”

He may be right. When finished, there will be two towers of 38 floors, encased in glass. Not only will it be tall and shiny, it will be dramatic. The towers are patterned after the concrete blocks that give Habitat ’67 its distinct look. The glass exterior will have “shifted blocks,” with sections extending out beyond the floor below or condo beside.*

The project is massive. Eight hundred units: from studios (363 square feet), to townhouses (2,500 square feet) and, of course, penthouses. The largest is 3,240 square feet over two floors.*

That’s a lot of real estate to sell in the hot, competitive market of downtown Montreal. Standing out matters and YUL does that well.

“It starts with our name,” says marketing manger Guido Caso. “YUL is the airline industry’s 3-letter code name for Montreal. Perfect for us. YUL is international in style and quality.”

“It will feel like a five-star hotel in an international city,” Miller said. “The lobby has 20-foot ceilings and wonderful furniture.”

All the furniture in the common areas will be Armani Casa (the furniture line of Giorgio Armani). Then, there is a private courtyard, with a pool heated and open all year, plus 23,000 square feet of patio and garden space. “No other downtown project has that,” Caso said.

As for the penthouses, (five in each tower) they drip high-end style. Scavolini kitchens and marble floors are just the beginning.

“Typically, our penthouse clients own three homes; one somewhere hot, one up north and now a home downtown. It is their last big investment. They want something special,” Caso said. So, the penthouses have 18-foot ceilings. “Most other downtown penthouses have 12- to 13-foot ceilings,” Caso says.

And being on the 36th and 37th floors, there’s the view, from Mount Royal to Vermont, thanks to 100 feet of continuous window walls in some units. Talk about your “wow” factor.

It’s fortunate the view is priceless, because the condo isn’t. The largest penthouse at just under 3,000 square feet costs $3 million.

A few years ago, an icône salesman told me that they cannot build higher than Place Ville-Marie (the tallest building in Montréal). lol, ok there buddy. I would never put to much faith in anything a salesperson says.

Of all the projects in that area this is the one I really have high expectations for. Can't wait to see the final product.
