Not to mention there is little to no street-level life in that area.

What specific area are you referring to? If you are talking about One Yonge Street then yes but that area is the verge of a major redevelopment including the land to the east.

The projects below, to name a few, are either under construction or in sales.

At least there's one city to represent Canada with a skyline that ranks right up there with the best (NYC, Singapore, Tokyo, etc.) the world has to offer.

Just think, Calgary comes in second (in Canada) as far as the tallest average height of skyscrapers downtown.  Vancouver and Montreal each have more highrises than Calgary- but their cutoff height is around 200 metres and the average height is much lower (around 150 meters).

Side note: Calgary built most of its towers before the price of a barrel of oil dipped below $75.00- black gold built that city.  25% of Calgary's downtown buildings is now vacant.  Cenovus built Brookfield Place (247 metres/810 feet) and changed their minds about moving into the behemoth.  Brookfield Place II (178 metres/584 feet) got scrapped before ground was broken.  Abandoned construction sites abound.  Talk about reversal of fortune.  Even the Flames can't get a new building to play in.
