Le Canal-de-Lachine s’étend sur 14,5 kilomètres entre le Vieux-Montréal et le lac Saint-Louis. Les travaux en cours s’effectuent dans différents secteurs.

 

Secteur Wellington – Écluse Saint-Gabriel

De la mi-août à la mi-décembre.

Réaménagement de certaines portions de la piste polyvalente et du sentier piéton, remplacement du mobilier urbain (bancs de parc, tables, poubelles), construction d'un abri pour des services d'accueil, installation de plusieurs stèles commémorant l’histoire industrielle du canal de Lachine

 

Secteur Écluse Saint-Gabriel – Atwater

De la mi-septembre à la mi-décembre.

Réaménagement de certaines portions de la piste polyvalente et piétonnière, remplacement du mobilier urbain (bancs de parc, tables, poubelles), construction d'un abri pour des services d'accueil, installation de plusieurs stèles commémorant l’histoire industrielle du canal de Lachine.

 

Secteur: Promenade Père-Marquette (Lachine)

En deux phases, de la mi-septembre à la mi-décembre.

Phase 1: entre les 15e et 21e avenues.

Phase 2: entre les 7e et 15ie avenues.

Stabilisation des berges, restauration des sols, remplacement du mobilier urbain (bancs de parc, tables, poubelles), réparation de certaines portions des murs du Vieux-Canal, remplacement de la passerelle Monk.

 

Tous ces travaux nécessitent la mise en place de détours sur la piste polyvalente. Les usagers sont priés de suivre la signalisation et de respecter les détours en évitant d’accéder aux secteurs délimités.

 

J'ai hâte de voir ça

 

Le canal lachine est mon "bébé" ces temps ci, je passe 2h30 par jour à rouler sur le parc linéaire, j'ai en masse le temps de l'observer.

Hopes high for skating, year-round cycling along Lachine Canal

Montreal officials are expressing confidence there could be skating on the Lachine Canal and year-long cycling along its bike paths as soon as next winter due to a newly supportive federal government.

 

Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna was in Montreal Tuesday to announce her government would invest $132 million over the next four years to repair the aging walls and locks of the 14-kilometre Lachine Canal. The work, to be done mostly in the autumn to avoid interfering with boating season, involves reinforcing the concrete and stone retaining walls of the canal, as well as repair work on its locks, spillways and the Gauron and Lafleur bridges. They are the first major upgrades to be carried out on the canal, built in 1825 to give boats a way to bypass the Lachine Rapids, since 2002. Another $10 million is going to repair the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Canal.

 

But of more interest to most users, McKenna said the government is studying proposals to open sections of the canal to skating and keeping the bike paths open 12 months of the year.

 

As a cyclist and a native of Ottawa, home to 7.8-kilometre long Rideau Canal Skateway that is billed as the largest skating rink in the world, McKenna said she is supportive of both projects.

 

“For me it’s important to see that families and children have the chance to use it, so if it’s possible, we will do what we can,” McKenna said.

 

Long requested but never conceived, the main impediment to having a skating rink on the canal and cycling 12 months of the year has always been a lack of political will, said Benoit Dorais, mayor of the Sud-Ouest borough through which the canal runs. The previous federal governments under the leadership of former prime ministers Stephen Harper and Jean Chrétien showed little interest, as did Montreal under mayor Gérald Tremblay, Dorais said. But current Mayor Denis Coderre and the federal Liberals under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have been in favour, Dorais said.

 

Ice-thickness tests were carried out this winter, the results of which are expected in a few months. The city and the federal government are looking into how to share the responsibility for clearing the snow from the canal’s bike paths, as well as the costs. The canal and its adjoining land are under federal jurisdiction.

 

The cost of snow clearing would be significant, but cost has never been the main obstacle, Dorais said.

 

Now that there is a political openness, Dorais said he can’t see why the goals cannot be met by the winter of 2016-2017, which would coincide with Montreal’s 375th birthday celebrations, and the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation.
