Peggy Hollinger, Industry Editor, FT Collaboration aims to have a part-electric test aircraft in the air by 2020 Tests will be carried out on a BAE146 with one of the four turbines replaced by a two megawatt electric motor Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Siemens have announced plans to collaborate on a hybrid test aircraft that will fly by 2020. The companies have formed a partnership to build a technology demonstrator with an electric motor that will help during take-off and the climb to cruising altitude. They aim to have a commercially viable hybrid regional passenger jet flying by the 2030s. A growing number of companies are exploring the potential of hybrid power in aviation. Boeing last month acquired Aurora Flight Sciences, a cutting edge US aviation research company. Boeing has also taken a stake in Washington-based aerospace start-up Zunum as it steps up its pursuit of autonomous and electrically powered flight. Zunum aims to have a 10-12 seater all electrically powered aircraft flying by 2022 and to eventually scale up to 50-100 seaters by 2030. Roland Berger, the management consultancy, estimates that 70 electrical propulsion aircraft programmes have been launched globally, about half by start-ups. The partnership announced on Tuesday will focus on developing an aircraft capable of carrying 50-100 passengers. The tests will be carried out on a BAe146 regional aircraft and one of the four turbines will be replaced by a two megawatt electric motor. “This is the first concrete step to prove what is possible,” said Mark Cousin, Airbus head of group demonstrators. He estimated that the fuel savings of hybrid propulsion would be “into the double digits”. While hybrid-electric cars are becoming increasingly commonplace on roads, adoption of the technology in aviation has been held back by the weight and power density of batteries. Frank Anton, Siemens vice-president of eAircraft, said this hurdle could be cleared in a relatively short time as battery technology is developing exponentially in response to demand from the auto sector. “We will have to get 10 times more power out of the same weight,” he said. “This is our homework. But we believe we can get there.” The pressure is on aviation to deliver cleaner propulsion. The industry accounts for 2 per cent of global man-made carbon dioxide emissions, but this is expected to triple by 2050 as demand for air travel accelerates. The number of passengers is forecast to double in the next 20 years alone. Electrically powered aircraft would help reduce the noise and emissions pollution from this growth. The partners are hoping to win UK funding for the project, although they refused to quantify the cost. Airbus, Siemens and Rolls-Royce are initially targeting the regional travel market for their hybrid aircraft. Paul Stein, chief technology officer of Rolls-Royce, said quieter and cleaner hybrid-electric power would allow airports to be sited more closely to urban areas. “It has the potential to move transport from rail to air, and gives the opportunity to connect any city pairs,” he said.

  5. Je voulais vous montrer cet exemple de tram hybride, qui peut rouler autant sur les rails conventionnels que sur de rail type tramway dans la rue. Le genre d'hybride qui serait intéressant pour la connexion Brossard-Centre-ville, voire pour la navette avec Dorval. RandstadRail is the lightrail system that connects The Hague with Rotterdam and Zoetermeer. It's a hybrid system - partly an extension of the HTM The Hague street car lines and the Rotterdam subway (Erasmus Line). The hybrid character also explains the two different types of vehicles used on this system. Alstom built Regio Citadis cars that run on "normal" street car routes through the city of The Hague and Rotterdam Bombardier built subway cars that connect to the Rotterdam subway system. Outside Rotterdam and The Hague all vehicles use former standard railroad lines: the Hofpleinlijn (oldest electric railroad in The Netherlands - 1909) and the Zoetermeer Line (1975). Both routes have been rebuilt to lightrail standards. The system is quite succesful, at least for Dutch standards. About 80.000 passengers use it on a daily basis.

BMW Welt by Coop Himmelb(l)au wins best of Production at WAFl Awards 2008 BMW Welt, literally “the World of BMW”, is a hybrid exhibition and automobile delivery centre designed by Austrian practice Coop Himmelb(l)au. The multi-functional centre is divided in 5 key areas: Premiere, at the center of BMW Welt, where the vehicles are handed over to customers on rotating platforms, from where they can drive out of the building via a generously sized ramp; Lounge, integrated into the roof and virtually suspended over the delivery area, supported only by the utility service shafts and a column; Forum, located in the north wing of the building, a state of the art Auditorium for up to 1200 people; Tower, in the southwest, a multifunctional area with restaurants, exhibition, sales floors and administrative offices; Double Cone, resting on eleven columns, a full-service event realm extending over several levels, including a stage with its own catering infrastructure, rotating platforms and infrastructure connections for events. Wolf D. Prix, co-founder and design principal of Coop Himmelb(l)au described the project: "The concept behind the design envisions a hybrid building representing a mixture of urban elements. Not an exhibition hall, not an information and communication centre, not a museum, but instead all of these things, along a passage organized under one roof and horizontally and vertically layered. A conjoining of urban marketplace and stage for presentations”. The WAF judges chose it as the winner amongst 12 shortlisted entries in the Produciton category and defined the scheme as “deeply indebted to Le Corbusier´s enquiring mind and dedication to experimental culture” adding that “Wolf D. Prix pursues new meanings and forms in architecture.” Incidentally BMW Welt represents the zenith of Wolf D. Prix’s fascination with turning clouds into architecture, as his words testify: "From the very start we’ve wanted to build cloud architectures and cities that change like banks of clouds.” The centre was also one of the 10 RIBA European Awards winners in 2008.
