  2. There's so many things wrong with her article, I can't even... First she implies that our society is spending $1.7 Billion when it's a private entity. Montrealers didn't, in some sort of degradation of our morals, values and priorities, choose to build a mega shopping center instead of renovating schools. Second, it's not like people are going to be spending more money because of this shopping center. They're already spending and putting themselves into debt. The difference is they're going to change their habits from shopping off-island or at Rockland or at Marché Central to shopping at the Royalmount. That's right, it's money that's going to be coming back to Montreal, supporting jobs here, and two inferior malls that aren't performing all that well to begin with are going to die and make way for other kinds of developments. Those are sacrifices I can live with. By the way, the people who shop in these malls, the people who use their cars to go there, are not the people who live downtown or in the Plateau and decide to walk over to the next street to do their shopping. They are people who live in the suburbs, in houses with their own garages and yards, on island and and off, and take their cars to go everywhere. They are the people who even have to take their cars to get closer to the metro or the train station before taking it downtown. Third, if traffic in Montreal is increasing, if shopping in the Plateau and Downtown is not attractive, it's because we as a society decided to make it more difficult to get around and find parking while not dramatically improving public transit to compensate. In an effort to be more "sustainable" and green, we've actually made it more convenient for people to shop at malls that are even further away. Lately it's become impossible to park downtown and I find myself wanting to avoid going there even though I love being there. Finally, she says it herself: 18,000 people leave the island every year. Maybe it's because they get a convenience that they're not getting here. Traffic lights that purposely turn green and red one after the other to slow down traffic. 70 km/h highways that don't really slow down traffic but are used to give us more tickets. Paying for parking everywhere we go. Parking restrictions (many of which don't make sense) on all the other streets. To top it all off, higher taxes! I love my city and I'm never planning on leaving the island, but we have to be honest about it. It's the only way it's going to improve. Rant over. *Drops the microphone*
  3. I don't think she was being negative about the new towers or building new towers in the area. As someone mentioned, she's been generally positive about all the construction around the Bell center. I think rather it was a critique of the city government and maybe their lack of a plan for dealing with the new traffic. Doesn't sound unreasonable to me, its all part of dealing with a lot of new construction and residents, as well as an actual concern for that area. Ever been stuck in traffic there when a game ends? It can be pretty rough... (I think this is my first post lol long time follower...)
