I would greatly appreciate your help on this issue. I am about to submit my PhD thesis in mathematics. The obvious next step if I were to stay in academia would be to obtain a postdoctoral position. The problem is that for personal reasons I have decided to stay in Montreal for at least two more years if possible, but in order to promote interaction between universities, most math departments are strongly against hiring people who have done their PhD in their city. This is especially true in Montreal, because the quality of research motivates hundreds of people from around the world to apply for positions here, and there is a serious lack of available positions.
I am thus considering the possibility of applying for a "real job" in the "real world," of which I know almost nothing about (compared to other people in their mid 20's). I know this most probably means leaving academia for good, and I would be ok with that, though I have absolutely nothing against academia, and I did very well in my degrees.
I have developed a couple of pretty decent iOS apps (Apollonius, iPaintbrush, and other less sophisticated ones). However, I am self taught in everything other than math, and I have no experience working for anybody other than myself (unless you count a research supervisor as a boss). This lack of experience is not necessarily a reflection of my abilities. It just means I had a relatively easy life as a student. With this much information I would be happy to read the opinion of others who know more than I do about the job market. Do you think I have any chance at finding a full-time job or paid internship in Montreal, whether it is math-related or as an iOS developer?
Update: Also if you are interested in hiring me, send me a personal message!![]()
